Freaking out - Brittany Norwood babysat my children not 3 weeks ago

Haha! I'm the PP who made the snarky comment--and I almost added they should stay in Kansas. We're remarkably anti-Kansas here.

Not Op here but seriously!? I'm sorry, but if I just found out that someone who watched my child a few weeks ago was just involved in a MAJOR murder case I too would BE FREAKED OUT YOU IDIOT!!! So really PP you would just say "humph, how weird she just babysat for us. Weird." and then you would leave it at that??? OP I too would be completely freaked out. You are not making this about you. If it happened to me I would have posted too just to vent it out of my system!

Why? Again, your kids are fine, and she's in jail. Next time don't hire sitters your nanny picked up off the street.

So what if they're fine? OP's not saying she's afraid for her kid's lives! She's saying it's shocking that this person is now involved in this huge murder case. PP it is shocking and I too would be stunned. To not be stunned makes you weird. And she didn't pick the girl up off the street. If she hadn't been picked up for murder you too would think she was babysitter worthy most likely.

I agree with your post 'til your last sentence. No, I would not allow someone to babysit my kids if the only thing I knew is that they worked in some upscale shop, and my nanny recommended them because the shop clerk seemed nice?! Especially when you have children who are toddlers and younger who can't defend themselves, it's just too risky to not be very careful about who's with them.

I don't have a nanny and use family or friend sitters so I can't really relate, but I think I'd have trouble leaving my kids with a person, no matter how much I liked/trusted them, after learning about this. It would make me really nervous and irrationally suspicious.

I think this sums up your post.

I'm sure the nanny had no clue that person would go on to murder someone. I don't think you can pin this on her nanny.
I'm sure the nanny feels bad about it. But she only met a nice, friendly girl who needed some babysitting money. I'm guessing the OP met her before leaving her with her kids and still hired her for babysitting.
Clearly, both got fooled by a person that wasn't as nice and friendly as she tried to have people believe.

Exactly! Hence, the need for better background checks/references or using someone you know well as a babysitter.

I'm the pp who wrote the bolded bit and I couldn't agree more. I'm lucky enough that I have family that wants to help out and will watch me kids, and if they are busy I have actual friends that might be willing to watch my kids. I wouldn't ever just hire a sitter that someone I know met yesterday in a shop (upscale or otherwise) and thought seemed nice.

And if I had been stupid or desperate enough to hire Brittany Norwood with so little to recommend her to watch my kids, I'd think "Wow, she seemed so nice/normal/*insert crap that neighbors always say about serial killers and crazies* I wonder what could make a person do such a thing". And then I'd go on with my life. Did OP dodge a bullet, possibly. Is this cause for all the hand wringing and gnashing of the teeth over what might have happened but totally didn't? Fuck no.

It seems like OP started this thread to watch us all bicker.

About her illicit raiding of the fridge? Her choice of Murder, She Wrote as tv viewing?

Another person who gets her knowledge of law enforcement fom TV. Yeah, everything can be considered important. Was she acting abnormal? Did she say anything? DID she watch murder she wrote. All things are important, until they are not.

I can hardly wait for MoCo Police to build a case based on the fact that this woman acted abnormally babsitting OP's children two weeks before the crime, and watched Murder She Wrote. That's a smoking gun alright.

Schools should also not hire molesters they pick up off the street.

Please reconsider. Lots of people can "seem really nice and have ambitious future career plans." Better to use someone you know well from your neighborhood, church, synagogue, teacher at school, etc.

PP - I can't believe people like you. Someone else chastised the OP for using a babysitter who used a babysitter (Brittany Norwood) without proper checks, etc. I use a very high-priced nanny service, which does extensive background checks, but yes sends women whom I don't know personally until they come to babysit. What precisely would you have me do? The options of family or some close neighborhood friend just don't exist for me, and my kids' elementary school teachers don't babysit?

And how many people who passed background checks have been busted for crimes against children in the church and school?

Oh totally, and it's a good thing too. If she'd been watching Law & Order or NCIS she would have known not to lie about being raped. And you can tell alot about a person by the way they eat their leftover pizza. Did she heat it up? Eat it crust first? Pick off the pepperoni and eat it first? These are all important clues.

Well seeing as how I'm not sending my kid to a catholic school where he'd be surrounded by dangerous priests or to a ridiculously overpriced private school that'd be more worried about it's reputation and keeping things quiet than doing the right thing, I think the odds are in our favor.

Yes, it happens. Not a reason to forego common sense when choosing babysitters for your children.
