I wouldn't do it. But I'm a college professor and you wouldn't believe how many kids are first-generation (the first in their family to go to college) or from backgrounds where going to a "good" college is meaningful in a way that the average 200-600K HHI DCUM family wouldn't identify with.
So I am absolutely not gonna jump all over someone for doing this if it's meaningful to them. Could it be tacky? Yeah. Do we know why they're doing it or how it came about? No. So, maybe just let people do whatever if it doesn't hurt you and your kids aren't begging for it? |
You must have a pretty smart kid. I do too. But I can also imagine being proud of a kid going to Mason. What a horrifically cruel comment to make about a kid. |
| It's a slippery slope from a bed party to a designer dorm room. |
| No. Kid did not want all that school themed stuff or pose for pictures. I have missed this trend, I don't do Facebook, Instagram, or TiKTOk. |
|
Why a bed? And is there an actual party, or is the “party” the posting of photos in the decorated bed? Is this more for the parents or the students?
So bizarre. So many questions. |
| 3 kids. No bed parties. My kids announced their decisions with a shirt or hoodie. I can see buying your kid a few pieces of clothing or a blanket they will use or maybe even hanging a banner (I bought one for DS’s wall) or getting a balloon. If you want, take a pic for your own memories. But these “parties” are so wasteful and over the top and posting all that feels tacky. You know the kids aren’t going to use the majority of it. |
|
| No. no one does it here. weird. |
| This is why we are seen as a non-serious people. These aren't middle school photographs. These people are attending universities. |
| The real Texas mums are 4x as wide as the person and you only see the head peeping out. Some even do a giant state of Texas shape. It’s so beyond anything anyone has posted thus far in photos. |
| Yes, this is really weird. These are first gen families that don’t know this is tacky. Maybe we shouldn’t be making fun of people that don’t know social norms. |
l Is tend to agree, however, I don’t think this is a first gen thing. I’ve seen celebrity kids with bed parties in CA and east coast. |
Yes but how much money is being spent on this plastic junk and why are we promoting all this bragging? Just buy a sweatshirt. |
Many celebrity kids are also first gen. |
Okay, but not the ones I was thinking of. I don’t doubt first gen does this, just making point it is not only this group doing it. |
