Virginia’s Colleges and Universities

Regarding difficulty of admission, this analysis placed UVA as the most selective school in Virginia, at 46th nationally, followed closely by W&L, at 48th:

This site places both of these schools, along with the University of Richmond, in the Extremely Selective category:

All that matters is how selective it is from your own high school

Very curious thread. Now very far from the original post.

W&L is the most selective college in VA. Even UVA is easier to get in.
Only because they're need blind for intls and thus farm thousands of international applicants

W&L is still harder to get into. Go seethe in your cry corner, UVA loser

College counselor here. W&L has 1800 students and UVA has 18,000. Admission rate comparison makes no sense. W&L considers interest, they do interviews - it is a different process and they look at more parts of an application. But in my experience, for students from Northern Virginia, the academic expectations are higher for students trying to get into UVA. This is partly explained by the fact that 25% of W&L students are athletes/have an athletic hook as opposed to the ~2.5% at UVA. But even for non-athletes, the academic threshold is consistently higher for UVA.

The standardized test scores for W&L have consistently been higher than UVA.

SAT scores can be games both by the taker and the school.

Are Randolph Macon and Roanoke considered good schools?

Many great public universities in Virginia for a variety of interests and academic abilities. There are many states that do not have as many options. What’s not to love? We are lucky to have a kid currently at UVA.

Not really

OP, welcome to DCUM. Many people are focusing on selectivity, but fit (academics, social, finances, research opportunities, study abroad, size, sports, housing, food, gender balance, weather, distance from home/travel etc) is much more important. Use info from SCHEV to find reasonable matches based on your son's stats, build a list, start research online and then plan visits (ideally when students are on campus). We did a mix of formal tours and info sessions and sports events.

Agree. Feel blessed my kid attends UVA. Multiple great VA options.

I had one kid go to W&M and one to UVA. My brother sent one to W&L. All different, but all very good experiences.

Only UVA has produced alumni who are significant in their achievements.

Only UVA has produced such utterly insecure alumni.

Stop falling for troll responses.

DP. It’s hard to believe that’s a troll when I’ve met so many UVA alums who act like that.

Well, I haven’t and I was a UVA Dad. It’s a myth created by the parents of kids who didn’t get in or weren’t even contenders (like one of my children) so an application didn’t make sense. All of the parents and students I met over those four years were delightful and down to earth. Remember this is a public university - it’s not like an uber private in the NE enrolling kids from tony, expensive privates. Sure, there may be an outlier here or there but my DC and our family never met them. Would you say the same about other great publics like UCLA and Michigan? No, I didn’t think so.

It seems UVA supporters on DCUM tend to disparage other schools. I guess it could be trolls.

I’ve never seen UVA parents disparage other schools. Please provide a citation or example.

In this thread: "Let’s be honest, UVA is the only real university in VA.". Like I said, this could be a troll, but this is what sets things in motion.

Is UVA-Wise truly as difficult to get into? 23% acceptance rate seems stiff compared to the way it’s discussed in here and on DCuM

UVA Wise has a 100% acceptance rate. You’re better off at any other Public University in VA.
