Same for UVA. W&L is just harder to get into.

W&L is also older and has a much, much higher endowment per student than UVA.

W&L also prroduces a far higher percentage of students that earn Rhodes Scholars than UVA.

W&L is so insignificant. Grads are much less impressive and decorated as UVA grads.

What about Mary Washington? All this talk about W/M, W/L

W&L is the most selective college in VA. Even UVA is easier to get in.
Only because they're need blind for intls and thus farm thousands of international applicants

College counselor here. W&L has 1800 students and UVA has 18,000. Admission rate comparison makes no sense. W&L considers interest, they do interviews - it is a different process and they look at more parts of an application. But in my experience, for students from Northern Virginia, the academic expectations are higher for students trying to get into UVA. This is partly explained by the fact that 25% of W&L students are athletes/have an athletic hook as opposed to the ~2.5% at UVA. But even for non-athletes, the academic threshold is consistently higher for UVA.

Perfectly decent school but not on the same level as W&M, W&L, or UVA. It is cheaper and heavily female.

This speaks more to the (perhaps unfair) standards UVA applies to NoVa kids than it does in comparing the quality of W&L vs UVA.

Have you visited?
It has changed a lot in the last few decades. It’s coed now, for one thing.
FWIW I know an alum from there who is AA and has said good things about their experience.

Is her name Candace?

Um, no?

Many of those schools are private. Is it actually every 4 year college in Virginia?

I was surprised to hear so many great things about CNU. I had not heard of it growing up out of state. Family friend sent a child there who had a great experience and graduated in 2020 with a good job.

The standardized test scores for W&L have consistently been higher than UVA.

Virginia has three public universities that are selective and among the best in the country:
1) University of Virginia at Charlottesville, which was the lower acceptance rate of them.
2) Virginia Tech, a large university known from engineering and STEM.
3) College and William and Mary, a former liberal arts college that has added more professional programs but no engineering.

These all offer in-state tuition rates and these colleges are well respected throughout the USA.

Then there are several decent public universities that are more regional in nature, some are commuter schools, and many have good professional programs. They are generally much easier to get into than the three above-

James Madison University
Virginia Commonwealth U.
U. of Mary Washington
George Mason U.
Old Dominion U.

Christopher Newport University
