Never even feel like they did anything wrong. Graham Platner did some things as a drunk 20 year old (sorry, despite you enthusiasm, most of us can believe he didn't understand the symbol because most of us are unfamiliar with the symbol) and as an immature young guy and he has grown up, acknowledged them, and apologized. Congratulations, Zionist posters. You convinced me to support some guy from Maine!

My earliest memories of childhood involve watching the Watergte hearings with my then SAHM; 27 years later I studied criminal law at GULC with the same Sam Dash I watched in those hearings as a very young child.

I say all this just to share that I’m a lifelong keen observer of American politics and all the roller coaster that entails. I’ve been fascinated by the rise of the MAGA cult - disheartened and disappointed, but nonetheless fascinated by all it revealed about the American electorate.

As someone who lived nearly two decades in Maine - including seven years at Orono earning three degrees, and several years living on the downeast coast the next town over from where Graham Platner calls home - I’ve been especially fascinated to see the rise of Platner and his own cult of personality over the last several months. It’s interesting to see how very like the rise of Trump and MAGA it all is, how very similar the way the Platner supporters deflect criticism and defend their candidate and his inexperience and ugly personal history.

I sense a FAFO coming for the cult of Platner supporters. I suspect there will be October reveals like the ‘grab ‘em by the meow’ but I don’t think Pig Platner will overcome them the way MAGA daddy did. We’ll see.

You are probably right because Democrats are much less likely to be cult followers and are much more likely to turn on politicians when they are imperfect. Right now, I don't expect perfection. I just want every single Republican who supports Trump out. I also want the major collaborators like Schumer out.

The rich kid who went to GW and is so into history that he can quote arcane FDR quotes on a whim in interviews had a Nazi tattoo for years and just didn’t realize it was a Nazi tattoo. Right….

I am 1,000% sure if there weren’t pictures of it out there he would still be fine with it and never apologize.

And thanks to this thread I will not be supporting the guy from Maine. Funny how that works.

Platner (BY HIS OWN ADMISSION, please don’t delete the post and sanitize the thread) is rated 100% disabled by the VA for PTSD, which causes neurochemical brain damage- sometimes permanent- and mental health/behavioral problems not unlike what is suffered by some stroke patients.

I’ve spend decades working with PTSD and other mental health patients, and just over a decade with stroke and dementia patients, so have a volume of real world experiences with the personality and reasoning issues that these various conditions cause.

Just keeping the record straight.

Hey aipac troll you are conflating things. His disabled categorization is a VA benefit term given his tours of service, and doesn’t necessarily imply he can’t or shouldn’t work or that he is now mentally disabled. He’s clearly quite smart and coherent and you just hate that he doesn’t support Israel

DP.
I don't care that he doesn't support Israel.
I do care that he donned a Nazi tattoo for 17 years. And, his claim that he was unaware of what it was.... totally unbelievable. You think a tattoo artist didn't inform him if there was any doubt?
I also care that he has not only downplayed sexual assault, but actually blames victims of sexual assault for being assaulted.

He is a complete phony.

Here you go again, aipac loser.
It was a skull and cross bones and he’s apologized for it.

You are such a desperate troll and willing to peddle lies and half truths.
it’s a totenkopf. Don’t you dare try to claim it’s a pirate ship flag

I find it 100% believable that a drunk 20-something soldier in a foreign country thinks the tattoo is “cool” looking & does not know / understand its meaning. If it were me, I’d probably have made an earlier effort to get it removed but I actually don’t know when he found out real meaning & when he had it covered. I’m so desperate to get rid of Collins & like enough of other things he’s saying that I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

He reportedly prides himself on his knowledge of history.

And you think a tattoo artist wouldn’t explain to him about his chosen art?

GTFOH.

Why would a tattoo artist in Yugoslavia (or wherever he was) necessarily speak English and explain a tattoo unless asked? Give me a break

Exactly. Drunk 19 yo American gets a tattoo in a Croatian shop 19 yrs ago, I 100% believe he didn’t know what it was at the time and probably didn’t think a whole lot about it for years. I do wish he had gotten in front of the stupid stuff he did/posted online though before his campaign got into full swing. The way things have come out in a drip drip fashion worries me that he’s not ready for prime time despite what seem like some good political instincts. I’ll vote for him, I despise Collins, but tbh I wish we had a better choice

He didn’t just fail to get in front of the awful crap from his past, he engaged in a concerted effort to try to erase all his ugly Internet posting history apparently too stupid to know that once it’s out there it’s out there forever. Less than a year ago he engaged in an intentional plan to deceive the electorate of Maine about who he was - who is obviously still is - and he didn’t come clean until he was caught out red handed by folks with better internet skills than he has. Then he issued self serving apologies without offering any plausible explanation for his ugly comments which reveal ugly attitudes that he held well into adulthood with a fully developed frontal lobe. He engaged in a further disgusting path of behavior by trying to blame his misogyny and bigotry on PTSD, which doesn’t cause any of that. He stated in the past and he still clearly thinks that rural Mainers are all stupid and racist, and he’s engaging in a performative act to get over on the electorate. His character is profoundly deficient and he is not fit to serve in the Senate. I’m a liberal who deeply dislikes Collins but I hope Platner implodes in the general election cycle. I hope all his vile skeletons come bobbing to the surface and bury him.

And then what? Who would you have be our second senator?

Collins will be reelected. Liberals may dislike her deeply, but she has delivered massively financial support to the people of Maine over her five terms and she is respected for that by many swing voters who don’t care for her MAGA enabling but see her as a reliable representative with seniority in the Senate who has delivered for Maine on bread and butter issues that matter more to most rural Maine voters than identity politics do.

People who cannot grasp this simply don’t know Maine. They may think they do, they may know southern Maine - the Maine that many Mainers call nothern Massachusetts. But they fail to grasp - as many southern Mainers do - the other Maine. Susan Collins is a County girl, and the other Maine doesn’t see her in a negative light.

I don’t want to eat corvids because they’re highly intelligent and remember the faces of humans and hold grudges where appropriate. Chickens are just universally dumb and often mean, so please feel free to make a chicken pot pie which I’ll happily eat if I end up being wrong in my prediction that the perpetually concerned Susie Collins will be holding her Senate seat for another term. But hey, at least the cult of Platner will have the next six months to crow.

You also thought Andrew Cuomo would win.

No, I didn’t. You cult of Platner types can’t seem to think beyond stereotypes nor do you seem to have capacity for holding opposing truths. I understand, it takes higher level critical thinking.

Anyone who actually thinks an election for an open mayoral seat in New York City can be compared to an election for a US Senate seat with a five term incumbent running against a self proclaimed communist with zero political experience in Maine, the oldest and whitest demographic in the nation, is just not a serious person. Or perhaps is not a grown adult with any real grasp of American politics.

Well it will be an interesting race for sure. Do you then if Platner wins establishment Dems will finally see the error of their ways and embrace left wing populism? Or stick crony capitalism?

Americans have had enough and don't want their tax money going to kill kids abroad. That's a big reason why Planter is polling well.

I just have to say it really makes me nuts to see all the Platner enthusiasts calling him Planter online. I suppose it's an autocorrect thing, but if you correct it a few times, your device will recognize the proper spelling and comply. Please make the effort; otherwise I will never get rid of the image in my mind of the dancing peanut guy with a Nazi tattoo on his shell.

The tax money goes towards war, corruption and tax cuts for rich people. Whatever's left gets dumped into the gas tanks. You don't even need to be supporting platner as much as trying to get rid of the current pile of crap.

Yeah I dunno about that. I’m in Maine, a Dem but not a huge Platner fan. He’s just continuing to do incredibly well in the polls. I think it’s because he’s doing the work, doing tons of town hall type events, and gets the outsider bump in a year when establishment is pretty toxic. My ( old white) dad was very impressed with him and there are signs all over the place for him. Obviously Collins has dedicated voters but I think it will be a very close race and could go either way tbh. Older voters on fixed incomes are pretty unhappy right now and there’s a lot of those in Maine. Anyone running on affordability issues, whether or not they can do anything about it, has a lot of peoples’ ears.

Agree. I'm a mainer (Dem) & have voted for collins in the past when she truly was more bipartisan. Yes, she's a county girl with support up north, but People from both sides are tired of her. She's not as reliably right as some Rs want her to be, she votes party line too often for Ds. She doesn't give a crap about constituents and hasn't held a Town hall in decades. She screwed all Mainers with recent votes. Is Platner perfect? No. But we need a change and I really hope he wins.

Historically Susan Collins’s concern hasn’t amounted to much, here’s to that happening again.

I'm curious if any anti-Platner posters have said or done ANYTHING they regret 15-20 years ago? Have we not all matured and grown and evolved? Don't we want people to do that and to own their past mistakes? I'm 50+ and when I was in elementary school, we used words I would never dream of using today. And the military is not, historically, a bastion of liberal and evolved thinking. They are trained killers. They stuff that many active duty soldiers see & do is no joke. Am I giving the guy a hall pass? Not exactly, but he is taking thr time to LISTEN to people across the state. And I believe he genuinely wants to do good. I hope he crushes collins in November.

No.

Pretty huge difference between Elon, who knowingly, willfully and belligerently gave a vigorous and defiant Nazi salute after already being called out for previous Nazi behaviors, and who to this day remains completely unrepentant, unapologetic and unremorseful about it, and who to this day still promotes things reflecting white supremacist / fascist / "replacement theory" ideologies, versus Platner who did what he did long ago, has expressed regret and remorse and apologies for it.

F right off with your disingenuous #bothsides trolling.

Platner is far from perfect but he's a damn sight better than the other side.

DP. Thanks for proving the point so beautifully. Zero self-awareness or credibility from people like you.
