Schools closed April 21

'Fairfax County Public Schools will still exceed the required number of instructional hours for students, as set by the Virginia Department of Education."

I love that the bar is the bare minimum. Missing days, especially at the end of the year before finals and AP exams definitely has an impact.

They really need to do away with the religious holidays.

Good Lord, how many words does it take for Reid to say, it's a voting day so schools are closed?

She has to over explain for the crazies who can’t accept it.

Dear FCPS Families,

I hope this message finds you well as the skies begin to clear, the days become longer, and we start welcoming more spring-like weather.

With recent news that there will be a statewide Constitutional Amendment special election on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, I am writing to share that our schools will need to close on that day.

A total of 168 of our schools will serve as polling locations and the Virginia Department of Elections has indicated that a high voter turnout is expected across the Commonwealth.

Providing polling locations during an election is one of the many ways FCPS supports our entire Fairfax County community, but it means that we must provide open public access to portions of our school buildings throughout the day. Given the anticipated volume of voters, this would significantly impact normal school operations and limit our ability to provide a secure learning environment for students and staff.

By closing schools on April 21, we are able to:

Maintain the safety and security of all students and staff.
Avoid disruptions caused by restricted access to key areas such as cafeterias, gyms, and parking lots.
Ensure our facilities are fully accessible and prepared for voters.

In addition, Fairfax County Public Schools will still exceed the required number of instructional hours for students, as set by the Virginia Department of Education.

We appreciate your understanding. Elections are an important part of civic life, and this closure provides an opportunity for families to discuss the importance of voting and public participation. If you are eligible, I encourage you to take part in the election.

Take good care,

Dr. Michelle C. Reid
Superintendent

Not enough words to clarify whether SACC will be operating, apparently.

The 22nd is also a 3 hr early release for my ES kids. Just hoping SACC will be open the 21st.

It wasn’t open September 9, so it probably won’t be for the 21st either.

I think the other poster was joking but seriously, if you can take PTO, just take a 5 day weekend and make memories with your kids instead of stressing about the most insane patchwork calendar. Your kids won't miss anything. If they are younger, anything taught Monday will have to be retaught Thursday in routine and if your kids are older, they can self-study during travel.

You don't have to play their games.

We already have other travel planned this spring but yeah it would be a good week to travel.

I have to wonder what the absences have been like for UMC children in elementary school this year.

Probably high. But families are making the choices that are right for them, and if FCPS cared they would change their approach. And if grades or scores were slipping you know the UMC families would change their approach or deal with it some other way. So it seems FCPS is making bad choices and families are adapting as they see fit. Not ideal but I don't' blame anyone for not making bad decisions for their families because FCPS is incompetent.

Does she get paid by the word? That could have been one or two sentences at most.

Split TWD and school planning day. Take computers home and be expected to attend meetings virtually. Sent out to staff.

FCPS is being negligent of its one mission-to educate!

The entire SB needs to be fired for allowing this Calendar to have occurred.
