Schools closed April 21

This. All the FCPS boosterS seem to live in a time warp, and believe no one remembers that school’s been held on election days, Veterans Day, etc.

You could argue the HS could pull it off, but the elementary schools are not possible.

Or you could just lock the entrance from the gym to the rest of the building.

Math is hard, Barbie.

That's likely a fire hazard. Some of you need to recognize that you don't know as much as you think you do about the laws and regulations that schools operate under.

+100 it’s quite comical to see them coming up with all sorts of ideas that won’t work. Lol. School is cancelled. Deal with it.

Glad you think losing so many days is comical!

That's why parents are having less and less respect for the educational system.

So tell me why securing a door won't work. You could "lock" the door, or put one of the many many admin staff in the doorway to prevent access.

OMG is sooooooo hard.... so so hard so we must give up so that we can get an unearned day off.

Which admin staff are you proposing acts as a bodyguard? So they are supposed to not do their regular job all day? And what are they to do if someone uses force? You are batsh@t!

Bodyguard to whom? It’s someone to stand at the gym exit making sure everybody goes the right direction. If you really think that requires a bodyguard, I understand the county employees at least three.

And you think an admin should do this all day? When they have a school to run? Get real.

The alternative seems to be in fact…not running a school that day. So yes.

It's because they aren't from Fairfax County and they have no idea. This board is flooded with outsiders who were told that there are political gains to be had in FCPS and they need to keep the narrative on track.

I’m just coming here again to say how sorry I am for the elementary parents. I remember the stress of childcare well and now off it made my kids will the schedules and disruptions. It was terrible and the fallout was felt for days.

Brighter days are ahead and when they are teens you will love these random days off. This is not that far before AP exams start so my kid is THRILLED to have this gift to stay home and study. She’s already feeling the pressure of the exams.

They did it in the past, apparently. Or maybe the election staff should hire security to monitor it if they insist on using schools as polling places.

This how things used to be done.

That explains some board members but wtf is with the random DCUM posters who act like school was invented yesterday and we never went on election days, never went to school veterans day, etc.

Certain Board members and the local Dem party have told activists to engage here. They hold a 12-0 Board in one of the biggest schools in the county. What happens in FCPS influences schools everywhere else in the US and if their policies fail it's backwards progress for the party. Or so they think/tell people.

If you follow closely, some posters slip and say things like "well, my kids are in MoCo" or "I don't know anything about Fairfax schools but..." If you only know CA or NY or MD school systems, you wouldn't have any idea some things are new and that's why these out-of-area posters go slightly crazy thinking parents who want to return to the 2016 calendar want to time warp back to the 1950s. They aren't informed or particularly good at logic. They are here on a political ideological mission. It's best to ignore them.

This is a very transient area. A lot of parents with kids in FCPS today did not attend FCPS. They came from other school districts from other states or countries and have opinions on the school calendar that differ from yours.

DP but there’s a difference between saying “this isn’t how it was done where I grew up” and acting incredulous that somebody might be assigned to stand at the gym door, or follow whatever procedure that was in place three whole years ago when this was a common practice.

This cannot be true. Surely if they had they would give them better talking points, and not suggest they make easily disproven statements that a cursory google show are bonkers?

Much ado. If the Democrats like Surovell keep pushing a casino in Tysons a lot of folks may punish them by sitting out this vote or voting against the amendment. We’ll lose a day of school and Spanberger will get an early wake-up call.
