If you live in a $1-3 million house why don’t you shovel your sidewalk

Anonymous
Our sidewalks were dry yesterday after the service we paid hundreds to clear finished. Then at midnight the plow came and made am ice wall that got on part of the cleared sidewalk and all of our driveway apron. Woke up. Snow crew was promised this afternoon. Didn't come. We are in 70s with asthma, back, heart issues.
I don't know what to do. Neighbors are struggling with theirs. They know we pay service, no sympathy there.

My amazing 16yo son woke up at 5am unprompted and shoveled out and a nice neighbors sidewalk! I didn’t want to bother him with it, we would’ve not, but he did it himself and we’re treating him for it.

I think you are underestimating the reality of this snowstorm. The ice on top of the snow is too heavy for many people to shovel.

My otherwise healthy 56 year old husband said he can’t handle the shoveling anymore. He did the best he could, but we aren’t risking his life so someone can walk their dog. Nobody on our street walks to work or public transportation. Kids are driven to school in cars.

And since our street hasn’t been plowed, nobody can drive into the neighborhood to shovel.

Snow blowers aren’t working on the heavy ice either.

It's only "too heavy" if you waited to shovel it. There was a reason why everyone recommended shoveling early and often.

Too bad. I’ll shovel once when I can. If I can’t get it all, oh well. You’ll have to wait until next week for it to melt. I’m not going to injure myself clearing snow. If you’re so desperate to have sidewalks cleared then walk around and get to shoveling.

Sure. And it you were out of town, paid someone to shovel, and after they were done the the plow came and put a wall of ice in front of your driveway and on some of your sidewalk, you are SOL. ESP tough to handle when you are flying in late and come home to this ice mess.

us to! We cleared the sidewalk and entry the driveway and the snowplow blocked us right back in. It is heavy as crazy now. I tried again today, but it is one foot pile of ice at this point. So I had to slowly break it apart using a metal shovel and then move it away. Gonna take awhile. But yes, cars can get by with no problem. I just can't get out of my driveway which is incredibly irritating. Same with many on my block, but some people have dug out by now. My husband had to work so it was just me digging or chipping . . .

The people who live in the new builds in my Bethesda neighborhood are the worst at clearing their sidewalk. Happens in every snow. And they’re home - tire tracks in their driveway.

Why do people need sidewalks shoveled? Why can't they just walk on top of the snow? Or better yet, stay inside until it's nice enough for walks. Kids are getting enough exercise playing in the snow. No one in our area walks to work on sidewalks.

Why do we need public schools? Why can’t their parents just teach them? Why do we need courts? Why can’t people just work out their grievances themselves? Why do we need fire departments? Why can’t people just hook up their hoses to the hydrants and put out their own fires?

Schools are closed, bae.

And the government doesn't shovel the sidewalks.

What are you even trying to say?

Schools are closed and local police are begging people to stay home.

Given how dangerous shoveling this heavy snow is coupled with the frigid temps, nobody should feel compelled to shovel…especially if the only people out walking are catering to their dogs or fueling their exercise addiction.

PS - I moved to a neighborhood without sidewalks. All the dog owners are in boots and snowsuits quickly letting their pets do their business in the snow…as God intended.

You're full of shite wrt "how dangerous shoveling this heavy snow is". Utter namby pamby bull shite. The temps aren't dangerous. We all have coats and gloves. This is just entitled horse hockey.

When I lived in Burke, all my neighbors shoveled. We all knew it was necessary so the kids could get to bus stops. People hated the one neighbor who never did. We all knew we had to go out during the storm and stay on top of things. My dh and I managed this even with babies. What you're spouting is a load of entitled crap. Where I live in Loudoun, almost no one shovels ever and it is also based on entitlement. Neighbors have the money to hire people, but don't. Shoveling isn't going to kill anyone but my neighbors, in general, don't do hard work. They, and their kids, are allergic to hard work. It is beneath them.

Did you know that some children don't even have sidewalks at all!

Move back to Burke.

I was shoveling, but took a break and then when I saw OP post, I decided it would be more fun to stop, just to make her seethe.

There’s no need to shovel sidewalks in most areas. Only certain major roads lead to bus stops, metro, stores, etc. and those should be shoveled. But most interior neighborhood streets aren’t heavily traveled by people on foot…especially in these temps.

Tons of reports that major commuter routes were plowed and snow now covers the sidewalks with a thick wall of ice. Good luck with that.

I heard that CT Ave is only one lane in each direction, which means commuting downtown is basically impossible.

Why don't you shovel it instead of whining about it?

So our service came. Cleared everything. Arlington sand salt truck cane down street.
Beautiful.
Then a guy with a snowblower filled the street in a 40 foot length with snow! I went out and asked him not to do that. He said no place to put it. I pointed out nobody else had done that. Started shoveling street. Not supposed to shovel.

Then he did it again!

Google searched phone number of owner of house, a rental property. She had hired him. I raised heck about it. She was apologetic. Said she would call him. I said he better fix street, sidewalk. We shall see.
