If you live in a $1-3 million house why don’t you shovel your sidewalk

Hey! I was just venting about our d*bag neighbors whose entire driveway is clean and dry and whose sidewalk hasn't received one bit of attention

You must be complaining about my entire street because I only see 1 house with a cleared sidewalk.

We shoveled early and often.

This stuff is different, and with the sleet unless you went out with a snowblower at about 8 pm on Sunday and no plow came by to block you in, you can’t move it. We spent yesterday hand carrying the icy chunks out of the street to break through the plow mound to be able to get our cars out at some point. No snowblower is going to work on two inches of fused ice. So only a tiny bit of our sidewalks are done and there’s no way we’re doing the bus stop near our house.

This. Yesterday afternoon I went out to clear our driveway, usually DH and I take turns when it’s this much. He had shoveled once on Sunday, but the sleet and ice came on top of it until 8pm.

It is a block of solid ice and even though we both work out a lot, we cannot get it to budge.

I’m not going to spend hours of back breaking work just to shovel my driveway that will eventually melt. Instead I’m working from home all week.

I’m not having a heart attack or have DH (55 years old) have one either.

No one GAF about your driveway. This thread is about sidewalks.

It wasn’t that bad if you kept up with it.

We live in Fairfax county and you don’t have to here. In our neighborhood there are only sidewalks on one side. Our house doesn’t have any sidewalks. Across the street, most houses haven’t and I don’t blame them. It’s heavy and hard to move. That’s why.

My back hurts from the driveway. That’s why I’m not helping the neighbors with the sidewalk, before you ask.

We own a home in FFX but live in Loudon. The tenants in the FFX home moved out a week ago and I’ve been feeling terrible about the sidewalk at that house.

It's hard to find anyone, we got quotes 200-900 and a lot of times they don't show up especially the lower ones. I laughed at the price gouging email I got about hotels, snow removal is the main culprit.

We did it in Alexandria, and we live on the corner so it's double/triple the amount of sidewalk than everyone else. We did it in shifts on Sunday and then again yesterday. I was out with a hammer on that ice.

FFx resident here and I shovel our sidewalk if it is reasonable to do so. For this storm it isn’t reasonable. And I am far from the only one who hasn’t shoveled the sidewalk.

We live in a neighborhood with tons of new, huge homes that have replaced older homes with larger lots. The owners of these new homes are the worst when it comes to community concerns like sidewalk shoveling (and not just this storm with challenging ice to shovel). I miss our old neighbors.

Hope you’re also not a person who complains that school hasn’t opened yet.

Some rental property landlords are lazy and just want to collect their rent and don’t care about the law and public safety of others.

Most SFH rentals are maintained by the tenant. It is the tenants responsibility to clear the walkway.

DP here who doesn’t shovel and nope! Teacher here. My kids need a break - HS is stressful.

In our neighborhood, the people with the new, big homes are shoveling out their elderly neighbors.

It’s brutally cold outside…who is walking? And where are they going?

Schools are closed and local police are begging people to stay home.

Given how dangerous shoveling this heavy snow is coupled with the frigid temps, nobody should feel compelled to shovel…especially if the only people out walking are catering to their dogs or fueling their exercise addiction.

PS - I moved to a neighborhood without sidewalks. All the dog owners are in boots and snowsuits quickly letting their pets do their business in the snow…as God intended.
