Fri delay. But then why open for one day? Close.

Because we want kids to be educated?

And look at the forecast this weekend. If we can get a day in this week, we'll need it.

I love how these threads always turn into some form of “Back where I grew up we got real snow” arguments. Well you chose to leave your arctic shithole and move here and we don’t care about however it was done wherever that was.

I’m in Olney. When I enter my address in the county portal it says I should have one pass through by 5pm TOMORROW

To be fair, the day we return is the first day of a new semester and there will be practically no education being done that day

I live in Bethesda. Never saw a plow in our neighborhood yesterday. Now the roads are a brick of snow/ice. If people parked on the street and didn’t clear the area around their cars yesterday, they are not going anywhere for a while. For those that live far out, it will be a mess even longer. The county doesn’t have the staff, the plows, or the budget to handle this event in 48 hours. No chance of school on Wednesday. 25% chance of delayed opening on Thursday and/or Friday. That is being optimistic.

We havent removed anything yet.

I read the opposite - if you wait until the end you'll create a thicker ice sheet

I heard both and I shoveled yesterday morning. I haven’t tried to clear off my driveway this morning so I hope my decision paid off.

We shoveled multiple times yesterday including at midnight and found it easy this morning. My kid has been shoveling neighbors’ houses and was miserable this morning because he only shoveled those houses once yesterday and the new snow was a block of ice that took a long time to clear.

I shoveled twice yesterday - once at noon, and once at 8:30 (and the sleet had stopped by then). There was around 3" the later shovel, and it was miserable - orders of magnitude worse than the earlier time. I was hacking up blocks of ice.

I am a teacher - and I don't waste any day. Why put up with that?

Closed Wednesday.

But by Wednesday, we should have a better idea about this weekend's potential storm. If the storm does materialize, they will try to get the kids back in school at least Friday so they can be prepared before having at least Monday off of next week.

In west Germantown. My neighborhood is completely plowed out, including small side streets. When I drove yesterday, the main roads and neighborhood arteries were already clear.

The website says only 9% has been done, which seems implausible. But it also says they'll be done at 10AM today, which seems accurate. The site seems to lag.

I am in the Bethesda service area, and it says they are 13% done, with stages 3 and 4 expected to be complete by 6:30 pm tomorrow.

That said, we live on a school bus route that hasn't seen a plow yet, and it's miserable. I just saw a private contractor a couple of my neighbors use (a pickup with a plow) have to turn around because they couldn't get up the street, and they didn't even try to plow anything out - just shoveled off walkways.

So how many more days are going to be tacked on to the end of the school year then?

Already booked camp...

I teach HS and out first day back is already shortened because of a 30 minute homeroom. The 38 minutes i have for each period will be spent on assigned seats and classroom policies and expectations for the 20% of students who did not have me 1st semester.

No school Wednesday or Thursday. The sleet has made it very difficult to shovel. School sidewalks will continue to be a problem.

Anonymous wrote:This was a modest snow event. Nothing like snowmageddon or snowpocalypse. If we take more than 2-3 days to dig out of this and resume normal operations, we’re doing something wrong.

Wrong. This was Sleetzilla, and the sleetpack is extremely heavy, which is why county and state plows are having a hard time. Some plows got stuck yesterday. Today crews are slowly making headway, but this is going to take a while, because again, THE SLEETPACK IS HEAVIER THAN USUAL.

My neighborhood in Bethesda has seen lots of idling plows that were ordered to the main roads and just passing through, but none of them plowed our streets.

I am anticipating a Wednesday closure and perhaps a delay on Thursday.

There are other winter events in the forecast for early February, so the Superintendent will not want to close too long for this one. However, it's not all in his control. He can't magically make the snow lighter.

It doesn't matter, it's not like there's actual teaching going on at the end of the year. You have options: keep your kids in school, or send them to camp. It's all good.

How many of these camps use school facilities? How many of them employ teachers who look for summer employment?

Extending the school year will probably cause camps to start later as well.
