In west Germantown. My neighborhood is completely plowed out, including small side streets. When I drove yesterday, the main roads and neighborhood arteries were already clear.

The website says only 9% has been done, which seems implausible. But it also says they'll be done at 10AM today, which seems accurate. The site seems to lag.

My neighbor reported driving from Bethesda to Rockville this morning and said it was fine. But it’s never about Bethesda, Rockville and Silver Spring-it’s the rural parts of MoCo that keep the schools closed long past when roads are cleared in the more populous parts of the county

Yes and Silver Spring is way behind this time anyway. Don’t think we’re getting out tomorrow. And that’s not typical here.

Mine too but I am down county. I always remind myself that it needs to be clear 45 mins away in Poolesville. And I have been to Calleva Farm enough times to know what some of those roads are like

This applies to schools since the decision has to apply county-wide, but child care should be able to make decisions based on local conditions.

100%!
My question is - what day will they allow child care providers that rent school space to make their own calls based on LOCAL conditions and staff availability? Or will they keep at Code Red all week and force all child care to remain closed until it’s safe for the entire county to go to school?

I don’t understand why Code Orange (childcare can open) is tied to making admin staff in all school buildings report on-time.

I believe child care programs can't open unless there's a school staff member there to open the building.

Is that true? That's where I live and the roads have always been fine. I think the wider roads with fewer parked cars let them plow much faster. They're not going to keep it down to dry pavement, but they are certainly safe to drive on slowly.

We havent removed anything yet.

I read the opposite - if you wait until the end you'll create a thicker ice sheet

I heard both and I shoveled yesterday morning. I haven’t tried to clear off my driveway this morning so I hope my decision paid off.

We shoveled multiple times yesterday including at midnight and found it easy this morning. My kid has been shoveling neighbors’ houses and was miserable this morning because he only shoveled those houses once yesterday and the new snow was a block of ice that took a long time to clear.

It used to be they rarely closed admin offices. In recent years they seem to close admin offices for as long as it takes to clear snow from the entire county

The admin staff are often travelling from very far away, have some empathy.

It depends if we get more snow and it turns into ice. We have had multiple plows and we’ve dug out several times and right now all of it looks like no one has touched it. It’s bad.

Where are you located? We are in Wheaton. We are in an HOA and the contractors came once right after the sleet/freezing rain stopped. Sidewalks and street are completely clear.

I am in Kensington. Streets are not plowed and we are responsible for our own sidewalks. We shoveled 4 times yesterday but still have a coating of icy snow. I predict neighborhood sidewalks are going to be the big problem.

These snow days are a great opportunity for everyone to go out and practice walking on slippery surfaces.

I spent a few winters in an area where they were very good about plowing the main roads but not so much the side streets, and sidewalk clearing was widely variable. We didn't even get a ton of snow but it was COLD so when we did get it it would hang around for weeks. There would be stretches of sidewalks that were downright trecherous but you just had to adapt and carry on. Obviously everyone who can should be out there clearing or hiring someone to do so but things are gonna be slippery for a while.

That link says that for the whole county. It said the same thing yesterday.

Really? All of Silver Spring? I guess it's possible but given that it's 10:30 am and they haven't come through yet it seems optimistic. But I certainly would welcome it if it's true!

That's bs. On those days everyone else is going to work and the highways are clear. MCPS personnel are not the only ones with long commutes.

Each school and provider should be able to jointly make the decision as to whether child care can open. It is immoral to unilaterally make it impossible for thousands of parents to be able to work without making any effort to see what is actually possible.

What is your address so I know where to send the bill for my kid’s broken wrist from all of this “practice” they should be doing

+1 they haven't even bothered to plough the main street of my neighborhood once. They have no interest in reopening anything.

Why don't you pay a little more in your county taxes to get them to plow? Patience.

We pay plenty for county taxes. I could identify 100 things to cut to enable them to maintain the roads.
