It's in PG County...

depends on the school and the stats. If from a high performing school, it's harder. You need pretty high stats. Lots of kids from high performing schools with great stats get rejected from UMD.

You are correct.

I've heard that. what makes it better than other PWIs?

perhaps related:

DD remarked when we visited that it was the only tour we'd been were on where the diversity of the tour group seemed to match the school's published stats about the student body.

Wondering also, but it is said that it has a high rate of Black students that go to grad school later to get PHD

I think you mean UMBC. UMBC is the top institution for Black undergraduates who go on to earn Ph.D.s in the natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, mathematics, and computer science. Freeman Hrabowski, the former UMBC president, was an absolute force of nature with their stem undergrad research programs.

DS is a sophomore physics major

PP, does your DS find physics major at UMD challenging? How is the teaching quality, work load and cohort? Any research opportunities? Possible to double major?

I don't know about double majoring. Yes to research opportunities - in labs run by the professors. Teaching quality seems good. Good cohort. Work load doesn't seem too terrible - my kid was able to get good grades while doing a sport kind of intensely!

Thank you for this! My kid is a HS senior and interested in majoring in physics. UMD is one of her top choices.

UMD says that undergraduate classes are small for physics:
https://www.umdphysics.umd.edu/academics/undergraduate/ugrad-prospective-students.html#how-many-physics-majors-are-there-at-umd

What is small? 30?, 40?, 50+? smaller?

Can't answer this question but an attest that physics faulty is very strong and, of the few professors I've met who teach there, very nice. Plus IOnQ there so if your child is interested in quantum physics have some great opportunities. have met the undergrads that are doing internships there and they're impressive and will be well set post-graduation.

LMAO. Ummm no.

Unfortunately Monifa McKnight was able to walk away from mcps with a bunch of $ and then get hired at UMD. As a moco resident this pisses me off. Does it piss me off so much that I want to spend an extra $100k+ per child to send them out of state? No, I cannot afford to protest her hiring.

Kid loved the business school

wish campus had better lighting at night (but i think that for many schools)

It is actually gigantic, but maybe that’s your kids jam.

So is the real world. The real world is big. May as well get used to it.

Fun athletic events.

College Park itself is only okay, but improving. Not charming like Charlottesville but you've got plenty of amenities nearby plus the Metro to D.C. and soon the Purple line.

I've been to Cville numerous times and love the pedestrian mall area. I haven't really found it charming. If anything, it is about the same as College Park with regards to amenities.

Plus, there is the trolley trail for running, walking, biking and Lake Artemesia. Lots of places are easily accessible. Plus, the Trader Joe's and all the new restaurants within walking distance.

My DC (2024) had a great undergrad experience.
DC really liked most classes for major (Bio) and had time to take some cool non-major classes (music mostly) that lead to cool opportunities.
Also, participated in fabulous student-run extracurricular activities.
DC was ready to move on after four years. She’s now living in a bigger city for grad school.
Good luck!

Decision day Friday in theory, but the campus has been, and will be closed all week due to weather issues. Wonder if that will have an impact?

Speaking of very good food at UMDCP does anyone know whether they still have that white chicken chili or white bean chicken chilli over at the Smith school still? And what day and time during the week they usually have it? I would literally drive over to college park for a cup of that chili

This is what I mean when I said the food is good. It is objectively good. Not just good “for college dining halls”.

I’ve wondered the same thing, but I expect admissions staff can just finalize everything via remote work if necessary.
