BOE member pushes Option H for personal gain?

It does not and current Wootton parents are deathly against it. Wootton is screwed with every option. Wootton always had a target in its back because of the high Asian population. The county wants to spread out some of that brainpower.

And that is not a bad thing at all - why should Asian population be concentrated only in Wootton. Spread them around and improve the ratings of other schools.

If MCPS had any sense they would utilize this chance to rezone Dufief ES and Travilah ES to feed QO. Both schools are closer to Ridgeview and QO than to Frost and Wootton.

Asians should always stay the minority in every school, right? Heaven forbid they work hard, excel, or prefer living near their own communities. Since they don’t complain loudly enough, clearly the solution is to treat them however we want. Makes perfect sense!

Not my understanding. BOE votes on the boundary study, that's all. The regional model is getting snuck in without a separate vote, which is why MCPS is insisting that the two are linked. BOE votes on whatever MCPS recommends, not the other way around. So if MCPS says they are the same, that's how BOE will vote.

Also, BOE has already washed their hands of the regional model. They call it "operations" which falls under purview of MCPS, not BOE. So they say.

Not true. They are voting separately on the regional model. Basically a done deal though.

Agree a done deal in absence of intervention or a miracle, but how do you know BOE will vote on regional model separately?

I have no skin in the game but to me, Wootton cluster should be strongly supporting Option H. Sure, is it perfect? No. But it’s the only chance Wootton HS students will get to learn in a new, safe building in the 12-15 years. Renovation of Wootton isn’t in the current CIP and we know how easily and often school renovations are delayed even if they are in the CIP.

It keeps Wootton together and the location difference between the current Wootton and Crown isn’t much.

The question has now become choose a building or choose a Region/programs. The either/or choice harms Wootton.

False. It’s confirmed (ha, for now anyway) Wootton will remain region 4 even if it moves to crown.

I don't think this is a true/false situation. I haven't heard MCPS say that Wootton remains Region 4. But that doesn't mean MCPS won't change their mind in the future.

Asians not complaining? I guess you are living under a rock and not seeing all these petitions or the signs near the elementary schools zoned for Wootton.

Yeah spread them around thin so they can’t complain collectively anymore.

MCPS website says they will vote on the "academic program plan" (regional model) in December 2025 and the new boundaries in March 2026.

Correction: from most recent BOE slides in Nov.

Nov: Program Analysis Plan Finalized
Dec: You finally get a break from us!
Jan: Supt recommends boundary and program plan to BOE
Mar: BOE votes on Supt recommendation, early outreach to Grade 7 begins.

So, Gaithersburg residents lost a new school, and she can win votes in her county council campaign? This is f-ed up!

A politician serving her constituency!!!! Scandal!

At the last Board meeting they said the regional program vote will be in March. They will try to put it together with the boundaries so that there is a single vote, making it more likely to pass. But even if it's separated out, it'll pass. The BOE members will not oppose it at all.

Re Timeline: See the slide on the program analysis on timeline from the last presentation. It says March 2026: "Board votes on superintendent's recommendation." The slides aren't numbered so not sure of the slide #.

Among other benefits, it helps to secure Churchill’s boundary, which is in the district that the BOE member is bidding for a county council seat.

I thought that both the Wootton students and the families local to Crown would go to Crown under option H, is that incorrect? Who is getting hurt by this?

Please think about kids in Gaithersburg!

#100% right, from a moco lawyer.

Don't Wootton kids live in Gaithersburg and isn't Crown in Gaithersburg? Are there other Gaithersburg kids that this hurts and if so who? Genuinely asking, I live in Silver Spring and am not very familiar with that part of the county.

In option abcd, close to 2000 Gaithersburg students will move to Crown. Now with Wootton taking Crown, it only has the capacity to take 500 or so from Gaithersburg, and Gaithersburg High will still be 100% capacity. The city is still growing fast. It is UNFAIR to Gaithersburg!

Abcd is based on the old utilization numbers. The new numbers were released after those options came out (which made no sense, why couldn’t they have just waited?) and not only were the overcrowding issues no longer there, they could barely fill Crown.

They weren’t just taking 2000 Gaithersburg students and moving them to crown by the way. They were redistricting in a way that made no sense.

With this option H, Gaithersburg is actually within capacity. I heard it also leaves the ability to add another 500 seats at crown in the future should there be enough growth to support that.

You can go and check the numbers and compare abcd to h. Gaithersburg high schools are still very crowded. Hundreds of homes are being built there. Where are the kids going?

You say crowded but if you look at the metrics they are still under 100%.

The new builds- which developments specifically? The Grove is slated to go to Wootton, at least until they fix the elementary schools and do a study for them. The other builds with high end condos generally don’t have a ton of school aged children.

Look I completely understand why people in Crown are upset. They have been expecting a new neighborhood school. Unfortunately it’s part of the public school system and as it’s known to do fairly regularly mcps will change plans out of nowhere. But the neighborhood is losing a lot of goodwill with the nonsense they have been posting on social media. They would rather make sensational statements versus fact based statements. They are losing their credibility and making people mad.

What is fact based statement ? The fact is that >1000 Gaithersburg students who would be able to go to Crown and have been expecting this for years now lose their opportunity. Gaithersburg High will be 100% capacity and the other Gaithersburg high schools are close to 100%. In the first round, these schools would be 80-90% capacity, which is much reasonable for students and staff. Wootton’s condition was evaluated against the same standard as all other schools, what facts do you have saying it is worse and need to be rebuilt completely?

Yeah Churchill cluster is pushing all these from behind. Ironically Wootton is taking all the blames, though I do not have much sympathy for them

+1 Gives Julie more reason to push H.

They work too hard and complain too little, raising the bar for everyone else.

How can we hold BOE and public officials accountable? It seems, unless there is big scandal, they often get away from their mistakes and incompetence, even benefiting from it.

Vote them out come election time.
