Imagine applying to a school named “Washington & Lee,” where Robert E. Lee was the President and is in fact buried on the campus- and then self-importantly stating the “Lee moniker makes it nearly a non-starter.”

I think it’s pretty clear that neither you nor your son belongs at W&L And from the looks of it, God help whatever institution where such an obnoxious pair ends up.

Regarding the name, Lee was president of the college and instituted many educational reforms used by universities today. Any Confederate nostalgia was removed a few years back, an effort led by students and faculty. The school has liberal and conservative students. Greek life plays a huge part of the school culture which may not appeal to some so keep that in mind. Otherwise a solid school that has very competitive admissions. Beautiful campus.

What about the shrine to Lee underneath the chapel and the crypt?

Why don't you crusade for the name changes to Brown, UC Berkeley, Barnard, Yale, and Johns Hopkins? All were named for slave holders.

While it’s pretty awesome that the Washington & Lee sports teams are known as the “Generals”, OP must secretly envy Ole Miss students, who get to be “Rebels”!

W&L is a liberal school now. The Lee name was retained to court alumni donations but the school itself is far left. Visit and you’ll see what I mean.
