Can someone tell me how conservative Washington & Lee is? The Lee moniker makes it nearly a non-starter but trying to keep an open mind.

Regarding the name, Lee was president of the college and instituted many educational reforms used by universities today. Any Confederate nostalgia was removed a few years back, an effort led by students and faculty. The school has liberal and conservative students. Greek life plays a huge part of the school culture which may not appeal to some so keep that in mind. Otherwise a solid school that has very competitive admissions. Beautiful campus.

What about the shrine to Lee underneath the chapel and the crypt?

It’s a museum about a historical figure.

Interesting. Looks like the confederate nostalgia remains.

Why don't you crusade for the name changes to Brown, UC Berkeley, Barnard, Yale, and Johns Hopkins? All were named for slave holders.

Try not to change the subject. We are talking about confederate nostalgia and culture, which is still present at W&L, despite your erroneous claims suggesting otherwise.

Sure. Just show your bias about southern schools and ignore the history elsewhere.

If you feel that any of those other schools are too conservative for your liking, then don't apply and don't attend.

W&L is allowed to be conservative and people are allowed to decide whether or not they want to attend.

Just admit you were wrong. But you won’t. Lee was a loser and so are you.

Oh and by the way I’m a southerner that actually prefers southern schools. I’m just not ignorant. You see, being a southerner and telling the truth about the Civil War and figures like Lee aren’t mutually exclusive.

W&L makes Charlie Kirk look like a Bernie bro.

For whatever reasons, your bias is showing to suggest that W & L promotes confederate culture.

If you went to W&L it’s not a positive reflection on crafting a coherent argument. Throwing around the word biased is lazy and I’ve already told you I’m actually biased in favor of southern colleges.

Does W&L have a museum for Lee? Is their transportation system called Traveler? You’re out of your mind if you are trying to suggest there are no confederate undertones. Lee to W&L is Jefferson to UVa, you can’t pretend otherwise.

Well, for starters, he needs to be more open and learned about political differences in our country. Hopefully it’s only his mom who is bigot who gets her sounds bites from MSM. College is supposed to be about learning to think and argue from different points of view.

Well for starters OP this poster above is Anti American, stupid and racist.

OP you raised a fantastic kid.

That's silly.

The W&L bros are educated.

CK was an ignorant dropout.

Yet W&L still has Lee’s body in the chapel and VMI removed their first black superintendent for being too woke.

OP- watch a video of the annual Lee Jackson day parade in Lexington and decide if that’s the environment you want for your kid.

You are advocating for disinternment? Yikes. Now that you have offended believers in most religions…

In all fairness, do people not know that Robert E. Lee was the president of W&L after the Civil War? It was a fledgling school that most certainly would have closed without him. So maybe the school should close as well?

Robert E Lee was Episcopalian. They don’t have injunctions against disinterment (no N - internment is locking people up, interment is burying them. It’s good to know the difference.)

It’s good for you to know the difference between an “injunction” [sic] and a practice that is actively discouraged and requires dispensation. You should also be aware of the difference between 21st century and historical practices in the “Anglican” Church. Let me give you a hint: disinterment without family consent was a big — and let me capitalize the “N” — no, no.

Best private school in VA. Beautiful campus, rigorous education. Not a liberal bastion, students can find their people there, as is the case with most schools.

Greek life is a big part of the experience and tuition is high. Sure people are turned of by the name but the school provides a solid education, something that is lacking and many colleges today.

Other posters are reporting the faculty are liberal. Is high tuition a feature?

University of the South is better. Virginia never recovered from the despoiling of Richmond’s monument avenue.

Okay, the faculty are getting paid to be there. If I am paying for my kid to be there, it's an entirely different equation.

The last conservative I had a conversation with wanted to deport every single undocumented person in this entire country and told me that people that have an abortion are murderers. I am well aware of the viewpoint. It doesn't mean I want to hang around lots of it for 4 years.
