All these days off...

Lifelong celebrator of the Christmas thing here...I would gladly give up the two week long vacation for the holidays. If we want to celebrate, we'll do it on our own time. These kids are never in school.[/quote

I would too.

It’s what this site does best. Posters who haven’t been in the classroom since they were in high school themselves like to tell teachers how easy the job is.

I keep hoping the loudest voices bashing teachers are just a bitter few—people who, somewhere deep down, know they couldn’t do what teachers do. I want to believe that their cruelty is a mask for their own inadequacy.

But the fear lingers: that the vitriol isn’t just fringe noise, but a reflection of something more widespread, more insidious. And that makes the quiet support harder for good teachers to hear, even when it’s there.

I’ve hoped that posting a teacher’s perspective will help people understand what goes on behind the scenes… like the fact most teachers work on “days off”, or why papers take a while to grade, or why a teacher can’t stay after for office hours every day.

So often, I’m either told I have it easy, or that I’m lazy, or that I don’t have my students’ interests at heart. The loudest voices want to hurt. They don’t want to work together.

They literally receive the same amount of instructional hours as they have. The calendar traded other days for these holidays. Stop the pearl clutching.

Thank you! The kids ARE in school for the required amount of days.

And, from a teacher’s perspective, I catch up with all my work on these “days off.” I can’t imagine how I would survive if I didn’t get the occasional week day to grade and plan. I guess I’d just take more sick days to catch up.

Occasional? Like every week. You are very entitled. Most of us with real jobs actually work 5 days every week ALL YEAR…

Also, the kids might be in for the "required minimum" but this does not mean that it is better to have countless days off and go to school well into June!!

This calendar is an embarrassment. I’m positive if parents voted or even all residents, this absolutely wouldn’t have been chosen. Why is there no week long fall break? Or a spring break separate from Easter?

Why are there no 5 day school weeks between now and November 10th???

Parents need to pressure the School Board to change this!

Please be assured that most parents and students genuinely do appreciate teachers and respect the unbelievable dedication and sacrifice of educators. Most parents and students also understand that teachers are human, not superhuman, and they cannot be, nor should they be, available 24/7.

The loudest voices on DCUM hide behind anonymity because they cannot admit their insecurities and inadequacies as parents and people. Because they are failing in their own lives, they lash out at others, and unfortunately, teachers are often their targets.

Most of us do not have hatred for teachers. Most of us recognize and are grateful for the remarkable work teachers do with our children. Most of us understand how we need to work with teachers as an allied team.

The school board needs to reign in the superintendent. These terrible calendars have been released by her office, through the 2027-2028 school year, without any input. There is no longer a calendar committee and she has clearly stated that she doesn't want one.

The 26-27 and 27-28 calendars are significantly improved from the abomination this year IMO.

They haven't shown any interest in reigning her in, have they?

What's the problem with the 26-27 and 27-28 calendars? Other than for the poor teachers who have extra, unnecessary days tacked onto the beginning and end of the school years?

Not really.

High schoolers would much rather get out of school the end of May with fewer days off on the front end.

For all practical purposes, most of them are done after AP exams in May.

They all want to be done in May. These endless days off are useless. No one cares about the religious holidays and if you do, by all means celebrate and let the rest of us go to school in the Fall.

??? Both have us starting two weeks before Labor Day and not out until the 3rd week of June!

As a teacher this year, the days off are the only thing keeping my head above water. I'm finally caught up on all the grading after the last few holidays.

Except that there are. Maybe you need to learn how to read a calendar again?
