And not in many others. |
The elected school board system - with so much power - has not always been the way it has been done and doesn't have to stay that way. Education is far too important to leave to people who run for office only as a stepping stone to higher politics. |
You do realize that not everyone has the luxury of taking these days off? Actually, it’s mostly the lower income students who are harmed the most. They’re probably spending the day in front of iPads in their crowded apartments home alone. |
| Agree that the stepping stone trend is an embarrassment. From SB to BOS is a first step although some skip that step and go right to the state legislature. War chests are bulging. Why not elect educated individuals who are not married to political agendas who commit themselves to education of all our students! |
We are not Christians, but the holidays FCPS gives that we actually celebrate, we dont need the whole day off. We just need the evening and night to partake in the festival. Maybe just eliminate after school activities on that day. We would much rather have school. |

You all must be so damn miserable if every single thing that doesn’t go your way absolutely ruins your day.
|
Exactly |
Nope. Disagree. Great for new mandatory homework, test prep, college visits, SAT prep. Horrible ES, but another vote for great for MS and HS. |
Yes, it is - just wrapped around two weeks off |
As an atheist I don't celebrate any religious holiday and would be fine with school on x-mas. The issue is they would not have enough staff to open then because the vast majority of people in the US do celebrate x-mas. I still see no reason to have so many holiday. If students need to take off for religious reasons don't penalize them, isn't this the point of the O days? but there is no reason to extend the school year by a full 8 days more than other counties for so many added holidays. To top it off when they added all these holidays they also added back in Veterans day which is just insane. Something has to give. |
| SACC is open today so my kid just went there. |
You pass out the sample ballots at every polling place with that slate and convince everyone in the county who actually votes - which in these off-year elections is mostly political die hards - that your sample ballot is best. Until then FCDC and FCRC will keep passing out their ballots, the majority of the county will keep bubbling in what the blue one says, and we'll keep getting things as they have been. |
Which candidates? Are they on the ballot? |
There were a few in 2023 who weren't endorsed by anyone. I specifically remember a former teacher who seemed to have a meaningful, education focused agenda. Of course they got very few votes. |
+1. People are talking all about all the “unnecessary” holidays other than Christmas, so i’m really happy you put that on the list. I’m sure if the school board took off Christmas as a holiday there would be a huge problem on getting it back. Let people take their own days off of school if they want to celebrate their holidays. To the rest of us, we aren’t doing anything so why not go to school? |
