Again, and again. Every single post on this forum turns into a teacher bashing post.
It’s what this site does best. Posters who haven’t been in the classroom since they were in high school themselves like to tell teachers how easy the job is.
I keep hoping the loudest voices bashing teachers are just a bitter few—people who, somewhere deep down, know they couldn’t do what teachers do. I want to believe that their cruelty is a mask for their own inadequacy. But the fear lingers: that the vitriol isn’t just fringe noise, but a reflection of something more widespread, more insidious. And that makes the quiet support harder for good teachers to hear, even when it’s there.
I’ve hoped that posting a teacher’s perspective will help people understand what goes on behind the scenes… like the fact most teachers work on “days off”, or why papers take a while to grade, or why a teacher can’t stay after for office hours every day. So often, I’m either told I have it easy, or that I’m lazy, or that I don’t have my students’ interests at heart. The loudest voices want to hurt. They don’t want to work together.
Please be assured that most parents and students genuinely do appreciate teachers and respect the unbelievable dedication and sacrifice of educators. Most parents and students also understand that teachers are human, not superhuman, and they cannot be, nor should they be, available 24/7. The loudest voices on DCUM hide behind anonymity because they cannot admit their insecurities and inadequacies as parents and people. Because they are failing in their own lives, they lash out at others, and unfortunately, teachers are often their targets. Most of us do not have hatred for teachers. Most of us recognize and are grateful for the remarkable work teachers do with our children. Most of us understand how we need to work with teachers as an allied team.
