It's important to acknowledge that Meghan's been the subject of a palace-tabloid war for years, because she and Harry basically outshone the Waleses, and that couldn't continue. Racists and conservative hierarchy-obsessives loved, loved, loved this hate campaign, and here we are.

(FWIW, I'm an older white woman, but I have tons of high-placed British relatives, including one in the UK foreign office, and I know a little about how the British royal rota works. The palaces feed their pet rota "journalists" dirt on the Sussexes in exchange for positive coverage, and that's just the start.)

It's hard to overestimate the impact Harry and Meghan had in the first few months of their joint royal work together. And how their work ethic (see: Meghan's Grenfell Towers cookbook and capsule wardrobe for a women's charity) put Kate and William to shame. QEII kept sending Harry and Meghan on important trips, such as to Australia and Africa, while the Waleses' Caribbean tour was a complete disaster (see: Jamaica telling William they were withdrawing from the Commonwealth, and photos of Kate and William touching black children through a wire fence and wearing colonial khakis while riding a jeep as the "natives" bowed). Kate and William haven't done major trips overseas since, and there's a reason.

Which is why William will never, ever let Harry and Meghan return to royal work. As if the Sussexes wanted that, but that's another discussion.

Yep. Meghan was shining too much. Between that and the cultural differences plus the dysfunctional the way the family attacked each other through the press, it was a mess.

The rest of the year, she's been skiing in Switzerland and Courcheval, sunning in Mustique, on a megayacht in the Aegean, and on another two months' vacation over their children's summer break. Her kids are in school all day, and she's healthy enough to do all the skiing. I mean, if she wants to live her life as a wealthy aristocrat (and that's absolutely what William wants, too), then fine, but stop taking the Sovereign Grant for doing nothing for the public.

I hope Kate has someone in her life who loves her enough to get her the medical help she needs. William and Carole aren't that. But I can't admire her.

Get over yourself... most people wouldn't have even known Meghan was biracial until they saw her mom. No one cares. But lots of people thought she was a social climbing attention-seeker, totally out-of-step with royal tradition. And guess what? We were right.

There are a ton of crazy people on the internet (and in real life, but I haven't encountered them) who hate Meghan and prop up Kate and those who hate Kate and prop up Meghan. The things I've seen said about both of these women are insane. I'm a raging liberal and like Kate. I first was interested in following her because as someone with a history of addiction in my family, I really liked that one of her first patronages was about destigmatizing addition.

Between William and Kate, their interests are early childhood development, addiction, helping women in prison, mental health, fighting climate change, the arts, cancer research, and children's hospice care. Some of those have overlap with conservative interests, some do not. Their statement about Israel and Gaza was much better than a lot of democrats that I've seen. I honestly think they both are very smart to keep most of their personal thoughts and feelings private. That makes a lot of people think they're boring but if the worst people are saying about you is that you're boring, that's probably a good thing.

Ma'am Kate hasn't done anything tangible for her Early years program. Not one thing. She rarely does a speech or meeting but nothing tangible. She put out a Five Things list or something about early development that she took from an already established early development think tank and charity. She has been married in since 2011 and has very little to show for it.

As for addiction and women in prison, she made two visits in her 14 years of marriage and that's all I can find on the manner.

Heads Together was a charity developed by Prince Harry via their joint foundation. His team put together the events, Harry planned them, and Kate and William showed up for the photo
ops. When Harry left the charity remained with Kate and William and they haven't done any events since.

William only recently started Earthshot, his environmental charity, and by all accounts including his own it's more of a commercial endeavor than an outright charity. Winners are promised $5 million over several years to see their projects to commercial success however most winners have not received anywhere close to that amount and some have had to fold their research projects entirely. Every year the Earthshot gala is held in a different country which means a ton of travel for all involved learning to environmental harm. Also, Earthshot takes in tens of millions from Billionaire funders who themselves have made their money in industries that harm the environment. And recent reports have shown that the "charity" spends more on yearly overhead than it does actually finding the projects that won the monetary prize. Earthshot is not living up to its mission statement and is barely an actual charity.

Neither William and Kate have done much for cancer research or children's hospice besides go visit for photo ops a handful of times on 14 years. They haven't donated their own money. They haven't brought others in to help fund them either. Rose Hanbury, William's sometime affair partner and Kate's ex-friend, did put together charity garden parties for children's hospice care to which William and Kate attended. That's about it.

It's 2025, let's stop propping up rich people with unearned and unwarranted accolades.

OMG, Earthshot. That William PR vehicle that meets in hotel conference rooms on the outskirts of the COP meetings where the real work goes on. Although William always makes sure to get a picture of himself next to COP signage. Don't know whether winners have been paid their £1m each, or not, hadn't heard that, but it might be true. Anyway, agree that the winnings come from corporate donors, not William, and the corporate donors also pay for the likes of Heidi ("what is Earthshot?") Klum to show up for photo ops with William.

Lesson: some of us on DCUM actually understand climate change advocacy and the scales have fallen from our eyes re: William.

Wow that’s a new one to me, and about 90% of my friends are conservative.
I personally think she is attractive and poised, and has a classic style (that is obviously heavily curated to reflect modesty and elevated but understated couture), but I wouldn’t categorize that as an obsession by any stretch.
If anything, my conservative friends might see her on tv, Internet, magazines and share this view, but certainly they do not weirdly aspire to be royal or even express a desire to court the approval of the monarchy of a country we fought a revolution with to gain our independence. What relevance does the royal family at all to our lives?
