Per the discussion in the other thread, it is curious that while the Princess of Wales is beloved across the world, I do think it’s true that upper class women in the South definitely seem to admire her a lot.
I’m a bit confused because we don’t really have hierarchy or status here in the US so why do conservative women act like they’re…equivalent to Kate? |
“Republican women are obsessed with Kate M.” I disagree. Honestly, she is a pretty woman who dresses well and appears to be a very good mother. The end. |
Her fashion choices are kind of similar to prominent republican women a little twee, really long hair past the age most women wear their hair long. She does her makeup similarly to MAGA face with the the black eyeliner and prominent blush. But Kate does it better because she hasn’t overinflated her lips like most of them do. Etc |
I am a liberal woman. I think Kate is great because she is dignified and gracious. And we need more dignified and gracious people in this world. It is also fun to see how she and William are growing into their roles. It is not that deep. |
Why do you assume republican/ upper class/ conservative are all the same thing? |
Most of the world thinks well of Kate.
Conservatives have an affinity for class systems and hierarchies of all types, and conservative women naturally gravitate towards respect for Royalty and a desire to follow a Princess whose job is to dress conservatively and elegantly all throughout her life. I don't follow what Republican women like or don't like. But I see this with women from conservative/patriarchal cultures in many countries, notably Japan, where I am from. They all aspire to have that poise, willowy figure, and tasteful clothes. |
I disagree. It's the older People magazine reading crowd, regardless of personal politics.
I am interested in British royalty because I'm a Europhile. I like them better than movie and fashion celebrities partly because they are not allowed, by custom, to dress provocatively. I like clothes that are actually clothes and not strategically-taped wisps of fabric. It's interesting to me to see "safe choices" precisely to see how a woman of immense wealth decides to address the constraints of her role. The implicit bargain she has made. First ladies interest me for the same reason. More than any Kardashian in a bandage dress. |
I think it's mostly the bolded, but there's an element of bandwagoning with younger women who have glommed on to the backlash against Meghan Markle. A certain element of society was extremely triggered by a biracial princess and decided they had to take the other one's side, and the entrenchment became pretty deranged. Pretty much the same segment of society that gets mad when Princess and the Frog got a ride at Disney. I reject the concept of royalty in general and hate the British monarchy in particular, and I think anyone who "follows" Royals is kind of ridiculous, so I have mostly observed this on DCUM and not in real life. |
It's all the royals. Conservatives yearn for a hierarchy they think they would be near the top of. It's the same as poor people voting republican: they somehow imagine that their future involves moving in those circles themselves. They are blind to the contempt in which Rs hold them. "Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires."
Oh, and there's the racial aspect. When Meghan came onto the scene, they were aghast that a black women could be elevated above them, and rallied around Kate, whose whiteness makes her automatically superior in their eyes. |
“Why were you wearing silver today?” I ask while you’re wearing gold.
Your assumption is really off. |
I find this such a bizarre take. I do not think Kate looks like them at all and there is nothing wrong with wearing her hair long. Just, what? |
She’s a professional housewife. That’s why. Conservative women…. |
Why are republican women obsessed with status? Most of them are housewives and undereducated. Neither of these confer status unless you marry rich/up. I guess all republican women aspire to marry up and Kate is the blue print. |
The long hair, yes. But Kate has really backed off on the overdrawn black eyeliner in recent years. Compare the way she did her makeup for her 2011 wedding (lining the entire eyelid including bottom lid) to how she does her makeup now. Much better now. |
Meanwhile, Republican women have moved into ever-draggier and worse makeup habits (see: Mar a Lago face), so they're diverging pretty widely at this point. |
