It’s easy to watch the video, which you know is of a stabbing, and be confused about why people didn’t spring into whatever action you think was appropriate. Especially if you’re already arriving at the story on your authoritarian crusade parade.

For the people in the moment, I think it was probably a LOT more confusing and I don’t think they acted with indifference. They were normal people in a totally unexpected, very weird situation and I doubt anyone on the train knew what had happened right away.

It wasn’t just not help, a black young man at the end of the longer video pulls out his phone to record her dying.

That's normal. People are desperate for the TikTok content.

It’s common maybe but I promise it’s not normal

Why would there by any reason for the stabber to know she was Ukrainian?

And if the stabber didn't know she was Ukrainian, being a Ukrainian refugee, that detail, is unimportant. Except to a detail to the story. It doesn't add context.

Do I have that right?

In Portland a madman was harassing a couple of Muslim girls on a train during rush hour and three men stepped in to help. Only one of them lived to tell about, and he was nearly a third victim. All had their throats slashed. To add insult to injury, homeless people stole one of the dead men’s wedding ring off his hand and his backpack. It’s gobsmacking that could even happen, but it did. And violence continues on transit in Portland. They weren’t the last to die.

But in the video I have seen, it looks like he attacks her, gets up and leaves the train. Literally right after he does it. There is no struggles, he isn’t lingering or hanging around. So wouldn’t the threat be over?

The other people just sitting there (esp the woman across the aisle who looks DIRECTLY at the victim, eventually get up and leave too. It’s horrific. No one needed to get in a knife fight to even check on her as she slumps over and falls to the floor. WTAF?!

people on the DC metro would have acted indifferent as well. I guarantee it.

It should theoretically also not matter that the stabber was black or that the victim was white or that the victim was young and beautiful (they keep posting glamor shots of her)--but it does to many people. The main details are that it was a fatal, violent, unprovoked and senseless attack on a defenseless individual in a public setting by someone who is mentally ill.

I don’t think those people even realized what happened bc it happened so quick. I watched the video. I would have thought the attacker hit her and then got up and left. It was hard to see she had been stabbed until she started bleeding everywhere.

You cannot blame the bystanders. That insane man belonged in jail and the system failed that poor girl.

There is a poster or posters who keeps saying that the attacker can be heard on the video making a racially-charged statement. The videos that I have seen do not have sound. Therefore, I have been removing these posts. If there is another video of which I am not aware, please post a link to it.

The more important question is why was this career criminal allowed to walk the streets?

He’s homeless and like many homeless people, likely has serious mental illness.

Rs love to say we need better mental health access in this country after mass shootings by white men. Well, the same applies here.

And did he pay for the ride? This may sound silly in context but many cities in the world have systems that make fare jumping impossible, and it keeps people off the trains and platforms who only cause trouble.

To the second note: I would like to know what happened next! They must have called help, because the killer was arrested very quickly? How do we know that nobody came to her aid at all? When he left that's when things needed to happen quickly; pull emergency brake in train, help try stop the bleeding, call police and EMS etc.

Probably because he killed the man.

He did not pay for the ride, and Charlotte doesn't have enough employees working to check riders or protect them.

This was a very sudden and very fast and vicious attack, and they could not have jumped him to prevent it, only after the fact. However he was arrested quickly, so 'bringing him down' would not have made that much of a difference, but could have added more people dead and injured. However, I would like to know what exactly happened after he left.
