Are you a parent trying to tell another parent about the program you both attended? Admissions didn't come to Orientation. |
|
I went to orientation (of which there were 10 different cohorts throughout the summer (so I'm sure the comments made at each one varied).
|
It wasn't Dean J in the parents section of orientation that gave the stats. It was Tabitha Enoch, Director of Student Affairs. She even mentioned they had a Chess Grand Master, a Jiu Jitsu champion, business owner, etc. amongst the admit in the Class of 2029. But please note, I believe the "90% of the class were in the top 10% of their high school class" might mean "for schools that have class rank." Not sure, but it's a possibility. |
Um our kids at public schools in APs etc spend more than 1-2 hours a day on homework. This is silly. You are really not in touch. |
Your daughter's ACT is a bit low. The 75th percentile last fall had a 35. The next friend couldn't count on legacy as the Virginia publics no longer consider legacy. The SAT at 1550 is great, but you still need the entire package, which is a 4.4-4.5 GPA (median and 75th percentile). The third friend with a GPA of 4.3 is too low. Even the median had a 4.4. https://research.schev.edu//enrollment/B10_FreshmenProfile.asp |
65% unranked
|
Actually, those GPAs are slightly below the 75th percentile of last year's incoming UVA class, which was a 4.5. And, yes, you are compared to your classmates, so one could argue you need higher scores than the average. Even the median had a 4.4. |
Then he probably would have struggled at least a bit TJ |
DP I know my kid's best friend's stats. Certainly their SAT scores and ECs. |
Most likely differing abilities. Some students take 2 hours to do what can be done in 10 minutes by another. Homework for classes at base HS should not take much time for a strong academically inclined student. Regarding rigor, I will give one example. Take AP Computer Science A at base HS vs. Data Structures Including AP Computer Science A at TJ. This is equivalent class at TJ. At TJ what is covered at base HS is covered in the just 2 months of school and the rest of the time is spent on advanced concepts. These concepts are taught in classes that are typically taken in the 3rd semester at UMD. You just have no idea of much easier it is at base HS compared to TJ. |
Isn’t the class 35% test optional? lol |
If you actually know their SAT scores, that is very, very peculiar. |
I find YOU hilarious. Agree with PP. DP |
+1 The TJ parent here is absolutely clueless. |
+1 Yep. Convenient that the PP leaves that out. |
