TJ gpa for UVA, VTech?

Anonymous
I hear there are many TJ kids going to Mason. What gpa do they need for uva or vtech?

My 4.32/1550 TJ kid was rejected at UVA but accepted at Vtech, ended up at UIUC and now transferring to a private. A few other TJ kids that I know also had similar experiences.

That's insanity. Kid played sports or no?

If you are not a troll you need to educate yourself. Holistic admissions is not about stats.

my kid got into uva from maryland years ago but chose another out of state public. Didn't think much of it then, i guess times have changed.

This thread is about kids from TJ. Not Maryland.

Yet perfect stats will be rejected if the kid is otherwise boring.

4.32 is only a little above avg at TJ. No way that gets into UVA.
TJ provides parents access to data . Ask the counselor for the login process

One big drawback to going to TJ is that it makes it so much tougher to get into UVA.

UVA cares about kids being in the top 10% of HS. For TJ they are willing to go down to 20-25%.

A few of my child's friends who got into T20 ended up not getting into UVA from TJ. You have to be 4.4 or above from TJ to get into UVA. One child who is above 4.4 still did not get into UVA but has a couple of T20 admits.

Good luck.

It is the same from the top DMV privates. At Holton, the only UVA admits this year ended up matriculating at Ivies. At my other child's Big3 private, UVA required a 3.9 which frankly puts you comfortably in HYP territory.

OP, look at the Naviance stats for TJ (ask the counselor how to get there; or your kid if they are at least a junior). Note that the GPAs listed there are end of sr. year though so if you're looking at a rising sr's GPA, you'll need to take it down a notch. You want to look for "scattergram".

FWIW:
1. VA Tech's scattergram is all the heck over the place. They are really squirrley for TJ kids and even w/ high stats they are a crap shoot - they don't seem to like TJ kids much.
2. W&M reportedly loves TJ kids.

Spot on. This is true and my kids 2 different private schools (Big3 and independent Catholic). HYP level to get into UVA. It is the very top right hand corner of the scattergram that gets into UVA. Most end up chosing a top 10 college over UVA. The stats needed for UVA are frankly ridiculous.

You need to name majors as well – don’t assume every TJ kid is applying for engineering.
