Trump Orders National Guard to Washington, D.C., and Takeover of City’s Police

Part of me would like to see a more proactive police force, but Trump's plan is a temporary bandaid at best. For 30 days the kids will stay away from the tourist areas (and these agents will have nothing to do patrolling there). Meanwhile the turnstile jumping, vandalism, car racing, shoplifting in high crime areas where these kids live will continue full force (I see it every day on Minnesota Ave).

Better would be using the FBI to help DC SOLVE crimes, like my neighbor who was shot dead while riding his bike home from work at 11:30 PM for no discernable reason and police have no suspect. FBI patrolling the streets is a waste of their time and our money.

Oh no! Won’t someone think of the luxury watches???

Lol. I'm a longtime DC resident and I'm pretty fed up with crime but even I rolled my eyes at this being the example.

I do think if Trump succeeds at anything with this stunt, it might be the protection of luxury watches. As a longtime resident of NE who has personally witnessed shooting outside my home and also deals with the problems associated with a serious street drug problem in my neighborhood, I doubt anything he does will have any impact on my safety. He probably couldn't find my neighborhood on a map.

Because he's targeting only the blue cities with majority black and/or Hispanic people. Not the Republican run cities with even worse crime rates. That's pretty bad even by Trump standards.

You might want to consider why it is the blue cities with all the crime...

It's not?

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

Mobile Alabama has the highest crime rate.

You sure about that? The list in your link is ALPHABETICAL by state, not in order of highest crime rate. Alabama is the first state alphabetically. There are other cities on that list with a higher rate, they’re just later in the alphabet.

Read the actual stats.

It depends on the year but Mobile, Memphis, and St Louis are consistently rated up there.

https://mynbc15.com/news/local/forbes-publishes-list-ranking-mobile-2nd-most-dangeroutheir.

DC isn't remotely close to the most dangerous city in the US and violent crime is consistently higher in red states.

This is brazen, but not more so than Trump’s open corruption. Those watches don’t affect you materially, while Trump’s corruption majorly does. Also, I’m sure these were black youths, but you’re aware of all the jewelry heists involving white people, yes?

I did read the stats. Mobile is not the city with the highest crime rate per capita according to the link you provided after stating it did.

It's not. That's what you are missing.

It is!! I’ve lived downtown for 30 years and we lost all enforcement and reporting after defund the police and all the buildings in the area have had to self police. Not admitting the problem is how we ended up with this tyrant.

Agreed. I get very frustrated when people claim DC is "very safe" or argue that crime is way down and we fixed the problem. We didn't. That doesn't mean I think Trump seizing control of MPD is the solution, it's obviously not. But refusing to acknowledge that DC has not done a good job addressing crime issues since Covid is not going to somehow liberate us from Trump's grasp.

Also watching the fiasco with Trayon White and the ineffective dithering of the council over the last few years makes it harder for me to explain to people outside DC why the city deserves self-rule and, ideally, some freaking Congressional representation. I shouldn't have to argue for those things, but I am tired of the city leadership providing ammunition to the people who want to deprive us of democratic governance.

The MAGA republicans just defunded MPD earlier this year. Doesn’t anyone read the news?

Hi neighbor! I couldn’t agree more. There is a problem, but a 30 day national guard deployment isn’t the solution.

The National Guard isn't trained to do urban policing. Hence why their deployment in LA lead to basically nothing, they just harassed people.

This absolutely won't do jack shit about crime. This is about intimidation and control.

This isn't about crime. This is about publishing a primarily POC resident city that doesn't like Trump.
