Interesting. We have higher income and NW and have never paid for business class on personal travel.

You figured out how to take it with you then! Let the rest of us know your secret please.

if the plane crashed, all die. If first class, bc offered more protection, I would pay every time. NW $10m

You make your financial and travel decisions based on the likelihood of plane crashes?

Does that really make any sense at all?

so, you use points.

Wealthier you are the less you actually pay for. I don't think I have paid to travel since like 2010.

This is an affluent forum. If you want to look at the stats, Jeff posts it on the home page for advertisers.

Where are these stats coming from?

And what is the home page for advertisers? How would Jeff know our income or net worth? At best he knows my address from which he could gather median income for my area.

+1
I think it's highly doubtful that a website administrator could estimate the income and net worth of it's users with any degree of accuracy. Even if everyone is posting from McLean, the median income in McLean is nowhere near the incomes stated on this forum. Everyone has a 600k HHI...GTFO

You actually don’t get the protection if you use points.

HHI of c. $1 million, net worth of c. 5 million.

We always travel business internationally, even if it means paying $$$. We have done this since our income was about half or two-thirds of what it is now.

I have a bad back, have had back surgery, and sitting in economy overnight is very uncomfortable for me. It is also the difference between getting reasonable sleep and not. This is one of our greatest indulgences, and for us we get value from it, though I of course understand why others wouldn't.

1.2m hhi, At our income you would think we would be flying first class or private but we are frugal and only book business class in cash. Points don't work anymore as everyone is paying for business class or higher and planes are always full and over sold.

Couple things- yes you can get business class using points still, but its not easy and definitely can be time consuming to figure out how to do it well. But "points don't work anymore" is simply wrong.

Second, most airlines now only have business class for international flights, so it's not being "frugal" to book the most expensive cabin on the plane. We are flying Air France business (on points) shortly, and their new A350 to Paris doesn't have first class at all. They are phasing it out of most of their fleet except for a subfleet of 777-300s. No US carrier has international first class anymore, and even premium airlines like Qatar have mostly phased it out in favor of really nice business class.

1.2M HHI isn’t flying private $ unless you’re taking a Cessna you fly yourself

Interesting point. UHNW here.
We don't ever pay for 2 business seats, but both of us are United Global Services, and basically, if one has a work business class seat, we get the other one for free with miles (perk of GS). We will also buy international premium economy and use plus points to upgrade. We've been to Europe 2x already this summer. And flown business class on all legs, but didn't pay for these tickets outside premium.

Anyway, interesting to think about.

Anonymous wrote:I'll give you the inverse. HHH is about 1.5 and I would never pay for business out of pocket. Points for a long international trip but cash? No way. I can put up with anything for five hours. Also I routinely travel with my three small children. Obviously I'm not paying for five business class tickets and when I'm not with them I could sit in the middle seat in the back row and it would feel like first class on Emirates.

To each their own though, I spend money on stupid shit that I'm sure confuses a lot of people.

Similar. Dh and I used to call "first class" the row without children in it. Normally we would fly one adult with 2 kids either side. The other adult sat in a different row - first class. I'd never pay out of pocket for it.

DP

Who says I want to take it with me? My responsibility is to future generations, not to spending down my income. What a strange way to think - we have different values for sure.
