NW 5M. We have never splurged on that way but not that college is paid for I would consider it for a long flight. Not for domestic. We are both pretty small people and don't drink

Only mid six figures, but I’m too old to be squished into economy like sardines. I usually treat myself to first for anything over 3 hours. |
Here’s my story; I’m 55 and was for years, a phobic flyer. Didn’t board a plane for over a decade. Drove everywhere or sent my family without me.
My phobia was weird and unusual; mostly had anticipatory anxiety about the claustrophobic feeling of being crammed on a plane. Nothing to do with turbulence- being trapped. So, I fly only first class, ideally bulkhead. I pay without points as I’m still an infrequent flyer but this is the way for me! Just flew cross country without meds and slept most of the time. Victory! |
How do you make $1-1.5M yearly and only have a NW of 3M? Genuinely curious. Unless your home equity and 529s are extremely high. |
For those of us who upgrade, usually the choice is entirely independent of HHI and independent of net worth. I have been doing it since I was 25 and underpaid - in the civil service - no inherited wealth. |
And some of us have hit the point that we do both (business and fancy restaurants). Just did a France trip (16 days) with 4 Michelin starred restaurants and several others "Michelin mentioned"/whatever that means. We enjoy both so we include it in our trips. |
Sure, we can fly 9-10 hours to Europe (west coast start) in economy plus, but why? Much nicer to get 5-6 hours of good sleep, land at 10-11am and be ready to go for the day. Worth every $$ for us. Also, no way in hell would I fly to Singapore in anything but business or anything in Asia really. Did that when younger and it's miserable. |
May depend on height/leg room for some (like us) |
You might regret that when you are 65 and cannot afford to pay your bills and need long term care at $10K+/month. |
Not PP, but I’d rather die early than pay for long term care at $10k+/month. That’s why I’m enjoying life now. |
+1. If I need long term care at 65, I’m not sticking around. |
I love how everyone on DCUM is a multi millionaire. |
Perhaps PP is confusing upgrading (e.g., using points/miles) with paying for business class flights? |
Same. We also have back and neck issues. |
