Where did you get that impression?

Different parent, inbounds for Maury and I agree. Really unfriendly group of people. I’m glad we went elsewhere.

I live in the general neighborhood (but IB for/with kids at L-T) and I cannot imagine turning down Maury as an IB family for another public option... Maybe if I was really set on immersion? Insane to turn down a quality local school because you anecdotally think some parents (your neighbors??) are unfriendly.

In general, I find my Hill neighbors really nice and friendly, especially those with kids in any of the local DCPSes. We have loads of friends at Maury via local kids' activities. The friendly vibe is part of why so many people live and stay on the Hill even when it complicates school options later on. Sorry you've had such a different experience, but I think it's pretty abnormal!

Nah this is very par for the course if you’re not white. Also I don’t need to hear how you’re “considering” eastern and you’re “committed” to Eliot. I’m not sending my kids there either.

Non-white IB families turn down Maury routinely? For where? (I am also not sending my kids to EH or Eastern, but the same considerations absolutely do not apply to Maury which has fabulous test scores and a large group of high achieving students.)

Yup, the families at Maury are lowkey very unfriendly and unwelcoming to black families. This is exactly why the number of black students continues to plummet every year. The white families make black families feel like they shouldn’t be in the school or in the neighborhood. Mind you, the neighborhood surrounding Maury was predominately black until 2012. Clock it.

You’re very welcome! Don’t listen to these people on this board. The majority of them have the attitudes I described in my last post. I’m a black dad and I almost ended up getting arrested after I ended up going off on two of those parents about how their child was treating my son. Luckily the responding officers were black and didn’t say anything lol. They run their mouths on forums like these but forget that real life and online are two totally different things. And these are the same people who pretend to be “liberal” and accepting, but treat black families like they don’t belong. And then when a black parent goes off and says something, the black parent is the problem. Nope, the racist entitled performative “others” are the real problem. Don’t let their “Everybody Belongs” yard signs fool you. They’re fine with diversity as long as the diversity isn’t in their neighborhood or school. I want one of them to try to prove me wrong. I’ll wait…..

I bet you looked great demonstrating your low impulse control.

Can you identify what in this thread has been racist? I also think it's a big leap to think all the posters are from Maury, so I'm not sure why anything in this thread proves any point about Maury families.

I am sorry you had a bad experience at Maury, but the fact that you pointed to their reaction to the Miner proposal as "racist" does make me question your judgment in that respect. Miner is a bad school. I would not want my kids to go there. I do not blame Maury parents for objecting to a proposal that would send their kids there. That is not evidence that they are racist.

Miner is a great school. I went to an open house during the spring, and we loved Dr. Broquard. She’s a non-nonsense type of leader who demands accountability. She seems committed to making Miner into a top tier school. I adore her.

She was not Miner's principal when the Maury-Miner merger was proposed.

You were responding to someone who said Maury parents rejected the Miner proposal because Miner was a bad school. How good the new principal (as of August 2024) is now is completely immaterial to how parents felt about the school back in March 2023 - March 2024, when the Miner proposal was under discussion as part of the boundary study.

Especially as part of the reason she was parachuted in was in response to the feedback DCPS received during the Maury-Miner discussion that no one wanted to go to a school which had something like 6 principals in 7 years, several of whom were placed on leave.

Maybe you were one of the parents I went off on. It’s okay, we all get our feelings hurt at one point. Maybe next time you’ll think twice about being racist.

The world does not revolve around Maury parents… DCPS focused on a principal search bc the kids at Miner deserve stability and quality leadership - not just bc Maury parents brought it up.
Glad she is coming back for a second year, hopefully Miner can get some continuity they have been lacking in the past several years.

And to be honest, kind of irrelevant to how I felt about the proposal. Even if both schools are great, I have less than zero interest in splitting my kids between two different elementary schools.

The only reason you and others did not like the proposal is because Miner has black children. You aren’t fooling anyone and you can’t convince me or other black people that there are other reasons. I really wish that you people would say you hate black people with your whole chest instead of hiding online.

DCPS itself specifically linked it to the Maury-Miner idea. The formal recommendation they issued was that a committee should take back up the issue once a principal had been in place at Miner for several years. They did the search to get a principal specifically as a result of this process.

I am hoping at this point that you are a troll. If this is really your world view, then hopefully others now know to take all of your claims with a heap of salt.
