Dual citizen here -I want to leave this country

PS - Saying you want to move because of Trump makes one sound crazy. (FTR, I’m a very liberal Democrat.)

What Trump is doing to the country is insane. Who wants to live in the USA now if they don’t have to?

Presidents are temporary, both the great ones and the totally unhinged ones.

Whatever are you in about? Plenty of countries offer the same or better opportunities. Denmark, Sweden and Finland all rank higher than the US in the Global Opportunity Index created by the Milken Institute. And I would venture their flaws pale compared to the structural issues plaguing this country.

Far fewer job opportunities for the ambitious, salaries are typically much lower. Very unwelcoming to non natives. Not to mention long, dark, depressing winters.

I love Denmark but I'm not kidding myself either. There are virtues to Denmark, if you are Danish, and there are virtues to the US. And especially if you're not a "native" American.

Like this country is welcoming to non-natives? Come on, now.

And half the country has long, hot, miserably humid summers.

Just stop. You sound stupid.

America, with its original sins of slavery and genocide, is not a great country.

It's so bizarre when anyone posts as if the United States was unique in respect to slavery. Most countries participated in slavery at some point. Yes, even Denmark.

PP didn't say it was unique. You don't have to be uniquely bad, just also bad is bad enough.

The poorest state in the US (Mississippi) is about to surpass the richest country in Europe in GDP PPP:

Um…people who recognize our country is still the best and intend to fight for our democracy instead of throwing in the towel?

I’ll never understand the mentality of those who think peacing out is an appropriate response to Trump’s nonsense.

Similarly, I’ll never understand why so many immigrants from elsewhere opt to abandon their homeland in droves rather than work to fix their country. Nothing will ever improve when the prevailing mentality is “Screw you! I’m outta here!”

This country was never the best.

Watch the Jeff Daniels monologue in the opening of “The Newsroom.”

No other country in the world runs around thumping its chest, declaring it is the best. The fact that we so automatically disqualifies us for candidacy for that label.

Welcome to planet Earth. Here every country that has ever been a world power goes around thumping its chest declaring they are the best. Show me a country who doesn't. I challenge you. I've lived in 6 countries, and ALL, even the ones that have never been world powers go around with pride thumping their chest as you put it.

Are you 15? Or just naive?

I’m so extremely depressed because the USA is at an all time low. I don’t want to raise my daughter here if I have another option. Any advice? A judge would deny this I’m sure. Anyone gone through a similar situation?

This is why the world is in the state that it is. People don’t like where their country is headed so they leave. Then they don’t want to assimilate in the new country. So naturally tensions develop between immigrants and the native population.

It is simple, if you perceive a problem, stay home and fix it.

All the scientists fleeing to other countries are likely to encounter considerable resentment from native graduates who expected to fill those research positions.

Academics are quite open-minded. Also, wouldn't that same situation occur here in the US since there's so many foreign PhDs here?

Indeed it does. That's why we have limits of those kinds of visas. Academics are open-minded until you touch their research dollars.

If you "touch" their research dollars, they can't do their work. Even open minded people need money to pursue their expertise.

Agree.

Opportunities are better there. They've had tighter immigration policies and are wealthy due to natural resources per capita. We've let our population explode and now we have the problems associated with that. I do still think we are the best though. They don't have the same individualistic culture that makes is more innovative, for example. But if you are after a high quality version of mediocrity- Scandinavian countries are the best!

Plenty. But it's not without problems. The UK replaces gun crime with chavs armed with knives. And they all live on top of each other. Knife crime is really bad in countries that lack guns. Knives kill fewer people, I suppose. Really, the question you should be asking is where can you go where mental health is treated and its associated impact is low. Canada? Finland? Netherlands? I really don't know - but those countries are doing it better than we are and they have very different gun laws - better health services though.

It is completely illegal to own a handgun in the UK.

Yes and in terms of opportunity those countries still manage to give more opportunities to their poorest citizens than the US gives a poor person from Mississippi. So what exactly is your point?

Many of us don't have to get our opinions from a talking head on TV. Some of us read and formulate opinions all by ourselves.

You should leave the US, we have enough thoughtless zombies here without you.

I'll never understand your mentality PP - you can't fix the country. Why fight for the country that supports the head of the country whom is a monster? You my friend are in denial. Trump was elected by a majority of the popular vote regardless of how slim the margin and i believe he won this election fair and square. He won 7 battleground states. What are you actually fighting for because nobody shares your sense of patriotism except for MAGA. Leave before total corruption and destruction because the US you love does not exist as you remember it.

Many of us think our country is worth fighting for. You should leave. We don't want or need you. Ask the folks in Gaza/Isreal if they feel Palestine/Isreal is worth fighting for? My guess is you will get mixed responses there too - just like you and I differ. I strongly feel we can improve our country and although flawed it is the best country for me. If you disagree leave. You deserve happiness and clearly cannot find it here. We won't miss you.

Yes, so they take their kitchen knives and slice up children in the streets - or at least they did when I lived there.

So when you are on the losing side you flee? Good strategy. Run away, run away. We don't want to be a nation of cowards.
