Why Is Vanderbilt So Hot Right Now With DMV Families?

Anonymous
parents want ivies, kids want schools like vanderbilt. 9 out of 10 kids would choose Vandy over Cornell, and the reverse for the parents. Too many kids let parents control the application process. Vandy has attractive student, high level sports, Nashville, and happiness. Cornell has depressed uber competitive kids

and anyone saying “we don’t hear anyone talking about Vandy” in dcum private community is totally detached from the kids at these schools - and ur kid may be too

Vandy is indeed hot but it will never be as good as Duke.

+1 rising junior landed a killer internship - sooo hard to get for the summer after sophomore year. DC landed it by networking with alumns from greek house and business frat. And already has a better internship for junior year, which should translate to a job offer. My kid absolutely luvs it there, and had several ivy acceptances

younger sibling a junior in hs in DCUM region says it’s top 5 in terms of dream schools for the elite and cool kids

I’m embarrassed for the author of this post. Elite and cool kids? Are you 15?

Yes, the close to 50 percent test optional is problematic. Perhaps that will change soon.

But why? It’s clearly working for them? They have no incentive to change it.

In fact, I think they get a better social/leader type of applicant and desirable class profile this way.

Because the quality of their graduates will decline, and with that, their reputation.

At DD’s school, the kids who go to Vandy fit a certain mold: spoiled rich kids who are not best academically.

It’s all public information. The school announces who is in the top 20 percent GPA wise, and the kids put their acceptances on Instagram. In a small private school (fewer than 100 graduates), you interact with people over 10+ years and form impressions.

You sound unnecessarily judgmental and nosey.

Quite a few kids are picking Vandy over the lower Ivies, especially Cornell and Dartmouth. I know quite a few that picked it over Brown. Occassionally, they pick Vandy over Penn or Columbia, simply because of cultural preference. Almost never do students pick it over HYP, but I have seen it happen.

“Gossiping” is not about facts. Someone’s trying to hype up Vandy for what it’s not. Don’t worry about the neighbors’ approval, make sure it works for the student. Visit over midterms or finals season to evaluate the true vibe
