I like him too. Thoughtful. But there is no base of support for him.

The American two party system is very limiting.

This is very true! Don't think for a second our two rotten political parties are going to give up this power anytime soon.

True. The Dem party establishment is not so great either. Who is running things these days?

Money

Isn’t there a newish Dem party chair?

yeah - and the fact we hear nothing about him really says something

But let's say Nikki Haley is the GOP nominee. That's a problem for Democrats.

Democrats are on the wrong side of a lot issues that motivate voters - illegal immigration, violent crime, schools, racial preferential hiring, and yes, the trans thing. Republicans will go to town on all those issues.

I think a lot of people are confusing economic progressives with social progressives. Social progressives are an anvil for Democrats. But economic progressives are a big win for Democrats. If Bernie Sanders was 20 years younger, he'd win in a heartbeat. AOC is only 35. She's too young to fill that space. But if Democrats could find a middle aged governor who's all about the working and middle class, they will do very well.

I personally like Pritzker right now. He's saying and doing the right things. But there is a lot of space for someone to come out of left field and surprise everyone. The usual names - Newsome, Whitmer, Buttigieg, Shapiro, Walz, Harris - are not happening. You only have one chance to make a first impression, and they all failed. They don't have what it takes to win a competitive race against a Haley.

Agree with most of this. Economic Progressives are a large swath of the American people whether they realize it or not. Sanders and AOC are popular populists for this reason. Too bad the reason they are popular with regular people is the same reason they aren't popular with the wealthy folks steering party decisions.

Haley is not someone Trump will endorse and therefore has no shot at the 2028 nomination. It will be the doomed Trump endorsed candidate vs a very lucky soul not named AOC or Sanders in 2028.

You assume Trump makes it to the end of his term.

70% chance he does and even if he doesn't, the 2028 GOP nominee will still be a Trump endorsed candidate. They are stuck with that disadvantage until the 2030s.

I think candidates will be distancing themselves from Trump by 2028.

Winning VA, Getting back the house to control Trump. Anything else is a waste of energy. Newsom and Whitmer are both OUT. They’ve proven they are not up to the moment.

Can we stop expecting a savior? OP, I really hope you are DOING something besides writing on this board about 2028.

What did Whitmer do or not do?

As long as the Dems kick out all the moderates they will win. No more Schumer or other Vichy democrats.

The “moderates” are the reason we are here. If the Dems push the same old moderates out it shows they want the status quo.

No more hiring behind senate rules like the filibuster. Law and order need to be aggressively reestablished. Trump, his family, maga, corrupt judiciary, DOJ, etc must be punished.

Well, she is a woman and I think we all know that's not what we're picking for 2028.

But more to the point - at the moment the public was turning viciously against Trump on tariffs, she decided to come out saying "sometimes tariffs are good" - just utter political malpractice.

Also

you learn who's up for the moment when you see what they do in the moment. she's not up for it.

I applaud her action of hiring her face. She knows it can and will be used against at her to be seen with maga. She obviously thinks fast on her feet, and has good discernment.

The entire world knows she hides behind a folder like a child. "If I can't see them they can't see me." The memes about this if she runs will be epic.

As a dem, I do not support this. Enough with extremes. This county will go bipolar if we keep swinging far right and far left, it’s a terrible terrible idea. What we need is moderates on both sides.

lol you live is a fantasy world. There are no moderates on the Republican side. Disarming and throwing yourself on the none existent mercy of maga is a fools game. That is what you do when you vote for moderates. Remember how the democrats controlled the senate but were unable to even investigate SCOTUS’s corruption? That was moderates in action.

For democracy to work both sides must believe in it. The republicans do not believe in it. So go vote for Schumer, Joe Manchin, Kyrsten Sinema, etc. you will be putting the nail in your own coffin.

The moderate Biden approach failed. The country needs fighter not appeasers.

Amen!!! Moderates are not the answer!!! Biden was a moderate but was still painted as a socialist by republicans. Harris was a prosecutor, for gods sakes. Hardly a crazy liberal.

And identity politics should not be the focus (so no, ‘oh it has to be a man from X YZ!’ It can’t be this person because they’re blah blah). It does not matter. We need to pick a charismatic leader who is an economic progressive. Doesn’t matter what they look like or where they’re from.

I’ll remind that Trump is an old silver spoon Ivy educated failed business man from NYC who is twice divorced and married to an immigrant.
