You lost me at "conservative." I think most of the people opposing you have made it clear that they are lifelong Democrats and anti-Trump. So that puts them well to the left of more than half of America. There are so many people who live in the super liberal bubble of NYC and never leave it. And these people constantly call their moderate Democrat neighbors conservative, or worse yet accuse them of being like Trump. This is mean and rude and incredibly simplistic. And this is why we can't support someone like Mamdani. There is no willingness to compromise. So much virtue signaling. I will take Mamdani every day of the week over Trump and MAGA. Because as much as I disagree with him on so much, I truly respect that his heart is in the right place. But he just throws out these super progressive ideas without thinking of the consequences of them. Running a big city is all about tradeoffs and compromise. Cuomo admittedly has some issues with this as well. But he has been there before so gets the joke more. And yes, Dalton and Fieldston are extremely woke. The issue is that they are full of rich white people with white guilt complexes who are going overboard in trying to manage those. They have been obsessed with DEI. A good friend was considering transferring their public school child to Fieldston a few years ago and the vast majority of the zoom info session was about their commitment to DEI, DEI initiatives, diversity, etc. Almost nothing about curriculum, extra-curriculars, teaching style, etc. It was overboard. I am strongly supportive of diversity (which is why my kids are in public schools) but there is a limit. I think Lander could be tolerable. I wish he hadn't aligned with Mamdani as it is a bad sign. I think there are a lot of people who will have a ballot in some order of Cuomo, Tilson, Stringer, Myrie and Ramos. And for those who can't stomach Cuomo (which I can fully understand), they might slide in Lander. |
This is a race for mayor of NYC; I think it's fair to refer to Cuomo as the conservative candidate in this race, and his supporters as conservatives. You'd probably all be considered raving liberals in Texas, but we're not in Texas. Cuomo also has a number of qualities in common with Trump - the ego and bullying and self-centeredness and of course all the sexual harassment - that I don't think his supporters are grappling with. And, again, he helped ensure Republicans would control the NY State Senate, so if you're truly a lifelong Democrat and anti-Trump then I don't see how you could consider that remotely acceptable.
He's shown less willingness to compromise than Mamdani, and has a much longer track record of not compromising on stuff, and he's twice Mamdani's age so he has a lot less potential for growth in that area; if you're going to vote for somebody with unrealistic proposals then I don't think 'getting the joke' is a reason to pick one candidate over another.
Myrie and Ramos are both to the left of Lander so I don't know why anyone would have a ballot with those two and *not* Lander unless they're simply on some sort of personal vendetta against Mamdani and anybody who's friendly to Mamdani, in which case I would suggest that maybe there are reasons for that that go beyond his policies or supposed lack of experience. |
She doesn't "just have money." The rich yield their power to crush everyone else. Get a clue! |
There are many rich people who are extremely philanthropic and do wonderful things to help others. They’re not all selfish losers like Trump of Musk. |
I’m the OP who mentioned our school being dumbed down. Bingo on the guess of a woke Brooklyn district. Yes I was being a bit dramatic I admit. It does vary by district so downtown may be ok. You can always supplement too see the recent nypost article about math. We are doing this. |
That area has become notorious. People tripping over themselves to virtue signal and show how progressive they are. It is the race to the bottom rather than leaving the good alone and trying to bring up the bottom. And I am saying this as a Democrat. |
Cuomo also ushered in gay marriage and strengthened gun control. He raised the minimum wage and increased paid family leave. Forget about that? I will admit he is a very flawed person, but you have to admit that he did a lot of positive things, some of which are far from conservative. Very few people are completely at one extreme or another, no matter what advertisements tell you. Though Mamdani seems to pretty consistently stay to the far left. The Republicans in the state legislature you are referring to were far from Trumpers. That was a different era. |
“Very flawed person” - he’s a disgusting human being, he resigned from office in disgrace under a storm of sexual harassment claims, I believe one of them even on video. And instead of apologizing and making amends he’s tormenting his accusers in court and making the state pay for it. That really, really ought to be enough to not rank him all by itself; if somehow you’re not morally outraged by it you should at least consider the practical difficulties he’ll have hiring a competent staff when many qualified people will refuse to work for them for the sake of their own safety / well-being.
“The Republicans were far from Trumpers” so it’s OK to hand control of a legislature to the other party because they’re nice? Adrienne Adams is making some late gains in recent polls, Lander remains a great choice, you can fill your ballot with strong candidates who aren’t Cuomo and aren’t Mamdani and there’s a very good chance one of them will end up mayor. And if not, then at least you can sleep easy at night knowing you didn’t vote for a mayor who you wouldn’t trust alone in a room with your daughter. |
At 00:13 - agree that cuomo is a disgusting human being! I used to work for him. He is as creepy as they say and he is deep in the pockets of the city’s wealthiest. He hired their kids and grandkids to do made-up jobs. A thoroughly corrupt man. Google Moreland Commission if the sex harass scandals and the undercounted Covid deaths are not enough to turn you off. There is no reason on God’s green earth to vote for this ethics-less man. |
It seems like this thread was set up to drum up support for Mamdani.
NYC should elect him and we can watch the fun unfold! Another London and Sadiq Khan in the making. |
Mamdani hates America, so Democrats like him? |
I'm still waiting to hear how Mamdani will pay for his wish list.
I also want to know why and how the city should be running grocery stores. I go to a grocery store in a low income area. I see lots of people using various programs to subsidize their groceries. The city has no core competency at running a grocery store. Why should they be doing this. It is one of his many truly dumb suggestions. I can't believe people are dumb enough to fall for it. If you don't like Cuomo, I get it. But don't vote for Mamdani. Vote for Lander. Or Stringer. Or Tilson. Or Bozo the Clown. I don't care. Just not this guy. |
Cuomo wants to spend $1B on more cops when crime is going down, I don’t see anybody asking how he plans to pay for that. And again, he’s a sex pest and that ought to be disqualifying on its own.
Everybody here seems to be OK with most of the candidates not named Cuomo or Mamdani, why not just rank 5 of them in whatever order you like? But don’t rank Cuomo, he sucks. |
Quality of life crimes are not going down. Lies. Damn lies. Statistics. And crimes are not being prosecuted. Unfortunately no one decent ran against Bragg so we are likely stuck with him. By making the city safe people want to live here, businesses want to be here and tourists want to come here. Pays for itself. Mamdani has likely barely balanced a checkbook, nevertheless a ridiculously complicated budget of a gigantic city. The NY Times agrees with me on this - not making it up. And again, he lost me at "rent freeze." Dumbest idea I've ever. Rent should go up by inflation. Or some formula that factors in the increase in real estate taxes and utility prices. By the way, in addition to Bowdoin, your "man of the people" was apparently too good for public school and went to Bank Street. He lived on the UWS. Plenty of great public schools. All we hear about is Bronx Science. Tough life. |
I mean as long as we’re going to play the “this will pay by itself by making New York nicer and making people want to move here” game you can make that argument for Mamdani’s ideas too, but then it’s turned into a debate over the merits of the policies and you lose the whole “how will he pay for it” line.
The “sound fiscal policy” candidate in this race is Lander; the “knows how the politics of the budget process works” candidate is Adams. If “paying for stuff” is your lodestar, you should rank those two and not rank Cuomo. |
