How’s Sherwood?

My son was 13 when we moved here, and he attended Benjamin Banneker Middle for two months before I picked up a second job to send him to St. Bernadette. For high school, I chose DeMatha, because even 20 years ago, the local options weren’t ideal.

By the time freshman year rolled around, I looked at the students at Banneker and thought, If this is the middle school environment, why would I send him to a local high school? And before anyone calls me racist, I’m a Black woman. I’ve been watching the bus stop near my house for 20 years now, and there’s no denying that the kids have gotten rougher. If I had a school-aged child today, there’s no way I’d send them to an NEC school—elementary, middle, or high.

Well that’s a hot take, what do others think?

I would not recommend Aspen Hill neither. Same issues have been increasing and I’ve lived there since 1997.

Aspen Hill is lovely, but I think it’s getting more unsafe as the years go by (especially in the FV and RCV areas).

Lived in Aspen Hill since ‘01, I think it’s more of a demographic problem. Look at how schools have changed in the area since then.

How would you know which schools have got even any better? Look at some of the Aspen Hill apartments under Bel Pre Rd, those schools do more worse than here in the Norbeck/Bauer area schools.

PS, all schools in Aspen Hill suck too.

Which school clusters serve Aspen Hill anyway?

People should check out the schools for themselves. If they live in the NEC, talk to their neighbors that ACTUALLY send their kids to these schools. Most people here are only judging the NEC because it’s less white than the rest of MCPS. It’s disgusting!

She gave history, dates, and ages. I Understood her thought process.

I think it's either the Rockville cluster or the Kennedy cluster that most of Aspen Hill falls under. I imagine some might also fall under the Wheaton cluster too.

You are clearly bluffing with this statement. Rockville cluster elementary schools are not that bad. Look at Flower Valley or Barnsley, and you’ll see my point. Diverse schools that perform better than others in that area. Look at the At A Glance and MSDE report card. Better look up good sources buddy.

People who live in Aspen Hill are basically the Bikini Bottom citizens from SpongeBob. Most of the people I’ve seen there are absolute di**s to one another for no reason.

Oh yeah, that would not be a good experience.

I was negatively reviewed as a teacher here working well past over time hours and really sacrificing my health for the students. When I was fired for performance( right out of college during an exceptionally violent year) after jumping through the abundance of worthless hoops ( off hour dances, sporting events, volunteering until 8/9pm after arrive to work at 6am, etc) the admin questions "what school are you working at next?".

After working for this admin with no support only retaliation I said- I am not going to return to teaching- mcps ruined it for me. I was so stressed out from being exploited that it was really bad on my physical and mental health.

We are in the Sherwood cluster. There are bad parents who teach their kids to be racist all over MCPS. This is not the majority of families, and it is not the majority of families at Sherwood. Likewise, Aspen Hill has great schools with more affordable homes. Many posters here have no direct experience with these schools.

Unfortunately, Aspen Hill has been on the decline for the past few years now…it’s sad.

Magruder is racist? It's majority minority.

Honestly, my kid never experienced any racist incidents at Magruder. The minority population has increased a lot from her freshman year compared to today. Even then, Magruder is still okay, but I wouldn’t call it the best MCPS school nor cluster.
