How’s Sherwood?

Looking at my price range and other pyramids, I’m probably just going to go private, as the only areas in my price range are Olney, Fairland/Burtonsville, Aspen Hill, and Wheaton. I liked Olney the most, but with what I’ve seen and other pyramids not being good, it looks like private is the move now. Thanks for all the advice.[/quote
That’s a good plan good luck.

At least parts of Wheaton (or all?) are in DCC and it's a good school. There are other good schools in the DCC like Einstein and Blair.

As an Einstein parent, I wouldn’t call it good at all, and the poster’s kid may not be in a math or science track. Blair is kind of mediocre to bad if you’re not in the magnet program.

FYI, the WaPo article about the alleged racist incident at a sporting event shouldn’t raise concerns because it turned out to be a false allegation. Of course the WaPo and media didn’t bother to clarify that.

People down county love to paint Sherwood as as a lily-white school because it isn’t as diverse as schools like Einstein, Wheaton, Kennedy, etc.

But Sherwood is still diverse.

And like all mcps high schools, the bathroom situation isn’t great.

Re: private - good luck. So many people are scrambling to jump ship snd get their kids into private, but there are limited seats.

I think Sherwood, Blake, and Einstein are fine. Ditto for Rockville.

I think Wheaton and Kennedy are problematic.

You can google the mcps “At a glance” stats on racial and socioeconomics, noting it’s a bit out of date. Fwiw, assume all schools are more diverse now/2025 (particularly more Latinos).

And to be clear: none of these schools are good/great.

Any private would be better.

But realistically speaking, it’s very difficult (if not impossible) to get into a private school coming from public middle school. If you can get your kid into a catholic elementary/middle, you might have a better chance of getting into a catholic high school.

As an example, St. John’s College High School in NW DC had 1,700 applications for 300 seats.

Is your kid an athlete on a travel team who could be recruited? Then you might have a shot.

I’m looking at PG county privates, as those still have seats.

Which alleged incident specifically? There were at least three just that I heard about and they were confirmed by the school after investigations. Kids even testified before the BOE about the attacks by Sherwood students. You're really doing a disservice to OP by trying to misrepresent what happened.

We live in the DCC and many parents are very happy with the schools above. Why is your child unhappy at Einstein?

Reach out to Sherwood's Black Student Union and see if you can get some student opinions. Or see if your din can shadow a student. Get real experience and see if it's a good fit.

I’m Black, and I can also say I wouldn’t recommend you send your kid to Sherwood—only 15% Black, and my kid had many racist encounters. I also wouldn’t recommend the Northeast Consortium. If you can afford private, do it. I was faced with that decision last year.

Np- I think this is very good advice. I would look thoroughly into Sherwood before ruling it out. The problem with these schools is that the behavior of a few damages the reputation of a school that might be a good school for your child.

Yes, the kids testified.

There was shared culpability for some, and other allegations were patently false.

Einstein has a lot of issues, and so does Sherwood. I wouldn’t say either school is particularly racist.

I can report there are fights at both schools. You can ask your kids which kids are typically involved in the fights. (Hint: it’s never white kids beating up bipoc. Rather, it’s typically B on B or H on H fights…oftentimes girls.)

Einstein just had a lockdown last week.

I wouldn’t recommend Sherwood due to the reasons already stated. My kids went/are at Blake. We’ve been really happy there. You listed a bunch of areas but not the Stonegate area. It’s in the same price range as Olney.

It was 16% Black in 2022/3 and I’m sure the percentage has increased over the last few years.

Blake was 41% Black in 2022/3.
