How’s Sherwood?

My son was 13 when we moved here, and he attended Benjamin Banneker Middle for two months before I picked up a second job to send him to St. Bernadette. For high school, I chose DeMatha, because even 20 years ago, the local options weren’t ideal.

By the time freshman year rolled around, I looked at the students at Banneker and thought, If this is the middle school environment, why would I send him to a local high school? And before anyone calls me racist, I’m a Black woman. I’ve been watching the bus stop near my house for 20 years now, and there’s no denying that the kids have gotten rougher. If I had a school-aged child today, there’s no way I’d send them to an NEC school—elementary, middle, or high.

Still racist.

+1, I don’t believe a black woman wrote this, and if you are, shame on you!

Looking down on her own people, purposely trying to white wash her son, etc…

I personally would not move to Olney if you are a dark melanated person. Friends in past years describe harassment while neighbors openly smiled in their faces.

She sent her son to DeMatha, a school with a high black population even in the 2000s. I wouldn’t call that white washing, it’s just wanting to be with likeminded people.

I would not recommend Aspen Hill neither. Same issues have been increasing and I’ve lived there since 1997.

Aspen Hill is lovely, but I think it’s getting more unsafe as the years go by (especially in the FV and RCV areas).

Lived in Aspen Hill since ‘01, I think it’s more of a demographic problem. Look at how schools have changed in the area since then.

How would you know which schools have got even any better? Look at some of the Aspen Hill apartments under Bel Pre Rd, those schools do more worse than here in the Norbeck/Bauer area schools.

Did the same, but moved in 2005.

Finaly, someone said it.

Sherwood is majority non-white student body. BSU is huge and active. Ethiopian-Eritrean club is active. AP course offerings are growing. Sherwood has a lot going for it, go visit, compare MCPS HS profiles. DCUM isn’t reality.
