I see you and I thank you for being who you are.

My kids are white citizens but go to school with 98% Hispanic kids. I don’t have any way to know their status but can reasonably assume some of them are undocumented or have parents who are undocumented. The thought of this happening to them AT SCHOOL makes me physically sick. ICE does not belong in elementary schools. I can’t believe this even has to be said. It’s bad for all the kids, not just the undocumented ones (or citizens with undocumented parents).

have you ever thought about the impact of having families involved in criminal activities in our schools? What does that do to the school environment where our kids are supposed to learn and grow? It’s concerning to think that our children might be surrounded by influences that aren’t conducive to a healthy and safe learning atmosphere. when resources get stretched by illegal activities, it's our tax dollars that are being diverted. This can take away from the funding and attention that should be supporting our family’s and children’s educational needs.

Here’s what illegal immigrants might be charged with if caught breaking the law:

Illegal Entry (8 U.S.C. § 1325) - For those who enter the U.S. without proper authorization, it’s a misdemeanor with up to 6 months in jail for first timers. Repeat offenses can lead to harsher penalties.

Reentry After Deportation (8 U.S.C. § 1326) - If someone returns to the U.S. after being deported, this felony can result in up to 2 years in prison, more if they have a criminal record.

Visa Fraud (18 U.S.C. § 1546) - Tampering with visa documents is a serious felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and up to 25 years if linked to more severe crimes like drug trafficking or terrorism.

False Asylum Claims - Applying for asylum under false pretenses can lead to serious legal consequences, including charges of perjury or fraud. These are serious offenses that carry hefty penalties including prison time.

Your children are surrounded by American citizens who are criminals. Are you concerned about that. How about if IRS comes into school and audits your taxes in front of your kids?

Immigrants are less likely to commit a crime than an American citizen.

The things listed above are civil not criminal offenses…. Like driving 60 in a 55.

So no I’m not concerned.

If they’re here illegally then they’ve already committed a crime. Are you really this stupid?

It’s a civil offense like driving 60 and a 55.

Are you concerned that your children are sitting next to children whose parents drive 60 and a 55?

You seriously think entering and staying in a foreign country without permission is the same as going 5 miles above the speed limit in your own country, of which you are a legal citizen? No amount of evidence or reason will reach you if you equate those two things. I would also point out that nearly every.single.other. country has rules around this that are much more severe than ours.

Yeah that’s the problem.

Stop the fear mongering. INS literally needed a signed warrant to leave the front office of the school. If there are there to “raid” they will have a warrant with the named individuals on it

I don’t expect there will be a raid at my elementary school; I do think there could be raids of local workplaces and as a result, children could be pulled from school to be detained along with their parents. At the beginning of my career I had to reassure many immigrant parents that their children were safe from ICE at school, until the policies were established. I think parents are alarmed until we know more—my predominantly immigrant school had man, many more absences than usual today. I do have a concern that high schools with predominantly immigrant students may be targeted, since the optics of older students being removed is very different than for younger ones.

Guidance from admin is that they aren't expecting raids but are expecting officials to show up with lists of kids to pull. Assuming these lists will be generated after the parents are detained? Not sure. As long as the documentation is proper and accurate that the officials have, we are to comply.

And for those who think we teachers are just fearmongering, parents have already started calling and emailing. They WANT to know what they need to tell their kid to prepare them for what they may see or hear. Those with non-white kids want to know what they need to tell their kids or send to school in case these raids do happen so that their non-white but totally legal kids do not get taken.

Yes, but was under a different administration, wasn't it? This is the lawless wild wild west out here now.

The point of the announcement was to stoke fear in the hearts of immigrant families. We don’t know what ICE in schools or churches will look like, but parents and their children are scared.

Ehh, my kid goes to private school. Not the least bit worried.

Dumbest comment of the day. “I don’t associate with the Poors, so I’m not worried.”

Exactly. We're immigrants, but we're also highly educated and rational. ICE is not raiding Maryland schools.

Dear Lord. Some of you are massively stupid.

Nobody cares if you’re highly educated. Good luck with being an immigrant because Trump MAGA people have an irrational hate for people who are new to the country.

Pssst... it means they aren't brown, so they feel safe. They may be in to something. MAGA has clear ideas about what an American looks like.

how do you know where they are born did they show their birth certificates? Are you going to obstruct lawful investigations and get arrested?

Yes I do. All students submit birth certificates when they register at school unless they are refugees and may not have them.

What does this even mean, in practical terms?

It means they will physically have to remove students from my grasp. When a government starts entering schools to remove minors, our country has gone off the deep end.

ICE is not raiding Maryland schools. Right now[b]. The announcement was meant to make families fear that it will happen.

Where did you see starting there? That wasn’t specified.

Undocumented people also live in the suburbs because the poor have been suburbanized as the cities gentrify.

For those who think this is all a joke:

All MCPS schools were recently issued a 2 page summary document called Immigration Response Protocol for “what to do if ICE comes to your school.” Clearly the superintendent doesn’t think it’s a joke.
