This is velvet. Do not wear velvet to a spring wedding.

Who are these very odd dress police? The wedding is in March. In the evening. This dress would be beautiful and certainly more appropriate than something gauzy and floral.

Agree -- it's gorgeous and would be easy to style with a cool necklace and shoes. And if it's a freakisly hot day in March, have a back up.

These are all HIDEOUS! The OP is a 55 year old woman. Most of these dresses would be more appropriate for a 25 year old (who has bad taste).

I said the same pages ago—these are all pretty awful. I could see a tall thin Gen-Zer could pulling some of these off, but common ladies, have some self respect.

Let me guess, y’all are the folks trying to push OP into these horribly frumpy dresses designed for the elderly…

Really? It’s either tight leopard print, cheap satin, or frock for the elderly?

Even the most fit 50 year doesn’t have to same body as a 20-something. The cuts and shapes really matter.

Clearly hasn't been to NY in a while ^^. Or maybe ever?

Knocking on leopard print, lol. That wasn't 1987 leopard print, for heaven's sake.

Are you trolling? Serious question. Because these are horrible.

What is horrible about these for a 55 year old petite woman for an evening wedding in March? Show us what you suggest...

What is horrible? I will tell you:

The cuts are frumpy. The lace on the two with lace looks horribly cheap -- especially the one with the blue. You should pretty much always avoid lower-to-mid-priced jewel tone lace; it is always cheap looking. Likewise with the machine-done embroidery on that thing. I can also guarantee that blue dress is hard to fit, and probably scratchy feeling. Regarding the third one -- black and pink looks terrible on just about everyone, and that print looks cheap, especially in black and pink.

And I did give my suggestions. They are at 18:28 above.

Yes a lot of the first suggestions were awful!

I lived in NYC, thanks, but that’s irrelevant.

OP gave us no indication that fashion victim is her angle, but if it is, then she should go for it. Form fitting, full leopard print. Totally safe bet for a 55 year old at a DC wedding.

I'm about your height and size but in my 40s.

Since it said cocktail attire, I would wear a knee-length solid dress with short sleeves or 3/4 sleeves in a fabric which is formal and not too flowy. Black or jewel-toned.

If you wanted to wear a blouse and pants, something dressier, like taffeta:

OP, I am about your age and size, and I thought I was never going to find something I liked on this whole wild thread! But I love the 2nd one. I like the 3rd, though it is very short. You might be able to carry it off!

The Macy's suggestions immediately below this are pretty good, too.

That model is 5’10” so it would look longer on the OP

Anonymous wrote:This is OP and I want to thank you for all your suggestions and opinions -- especially those who went high when others went low.

To those who asked for more info on me: I have an hourglass figure, great legs and really good arms. So, yes, that's all lovely, but lace, sequins and patterns can be overwhelming on my figure and look matronly. The poster who said "God I hate being petite" probably gets it. That said, I'm going to try some of the suggested dresses and will also keep in mind the excellent advice from the poster who reminded me, "You have time for alterations. . . "

Finally, to the poster who suggested that any woman who would wear pants to a wedding is a lesbian -- bless your heart... and maybe try to get out more.

Ahhh, good, you did tell us more. In that case, try something like the 3rd Macy's suggestion.

You sound young and fun ... definitely avoid the LONG, fussy dresses suggested early in the thread.

I really like the first one - although I'd recommend the black. I'm 53 and went to an evening wedding recently. Every woman over 50 was in burgundy. I won't make that mistake again.

I like #1 and #3!

This are all awful. And Adrianna Papell is specifically marketed to old women who want frump.

Why is the blue Adrianna Papell dress awful and frumpy? Honestly the poofy skirt makes it look young, not old and frumpy.

It's a dated silhouette and color palette. I agree that the label markets to the frumpy crowd---this one appeals by looking like a dress that ladies wore to fancy events in the 80s.
