Sure, but I will bet a large amount of money that the same people who are cheering school being open today will be the most irate when their kids come home and say they watched movies all day because their teachers couldn't get to school. I guarantee it. |
Over 700 kids absent at one high school. What an extremely useful day! |
This is Jackson Reed I assume? Well, for the other 1300 students at J-R, today at school will be more useful than staying at home. And also, you posted this before 9:30AM - these students won't actually be "absent" until 60% of the way through the school day. I'm sure many of the 700 will arrive today, just tardy. Come on, the roads were mostly fine this morning. Yes, it will take some students and teachers longer to get to school today. And yes, some students and teachers might not bother trying to make it to school. And yes, some of the learning that would happen on a regular day will be delayed until the next day. But you don't cancel school when it's pretty reasonable for most students to get to school. |
Are you 80 years old? Have you never seen snow before? The roads are good. Stop belly aching and do your job. |
Do people really not get how many hourly and low wage parents send their kids to DCPS. Nearly 50 percent of our Title 1 elementary is at risk. I'm not the PP who said they'd prefer a delay but I also would have, but I also recognize my individual situation of being able to comfortably stay home with my kid, get more sleep, and still be able to work at flexible hours is not super common especially in this city. Not everyone who wants their kids in school hates their kids. I really promise you that. |
This has nothing to do with roads and everything to do with teachers with kids who live in districts with a snow day today. If you weren’t such a cretinous ghoul you’d realize that. |
No,,they won’t, because they got what they really wanted (not what they claim to want): a place to stick their kids for the day. |
I saw many kids (mostly Hispanic and black) waiting for buses (in delayed schedule and rerouted routes) for long periods of time. This was poorly planned and only equitable/good for those who live close to school or have and can drive cars. Shame on DCPS, the Mayor, and WMATA. |
The people whining endlessly for three days on the internet about snow days aren’t those 50% of parents whose kids are at risk. I really promise you that. |
Me again. Not saying school should have NOT open but the city must offer bus services if they are going to open ON TIME. |
I want to give props to the landlord or whatever schools are in that big building at 18th and Perry NE. They had the whole sidewalk perimeter shoveled. Made for an easier walk to my PK3 kids school
(Now about my other neighbors...) |
DGS is responsible for sidewalks....not schools. |
Not for charter schools |
Right. I don't think a lot of them are on DCUM at all. It doesn't mean that decisions weren't made with them in mind. Though I absolutely agree about the issues with not communicating with WMATA and leaving kids stranded for long times. All people are trying to reiterate is that there are a lot of people being considered here and no one in city hall (as inept as they are) is coming on to this board to determine school opening. The 10 people screeching into the void that people are pansies and should open school versus the 10 people screaming everyone who wants school open hates their kids is really not how decisions are being made. If you think your kid is better off at home keep them at home. The truancy officer isn't going to come to your house for a day. Most daycare, public works, private schools, the federal government, and businesses are open today. Yes sure some teachers will have to take days off or find alternate care but that is true all times DCPS and MCPS and PGCS don't match up off days. |
This to me is the real argument. Teachers have had to find flexibility before, like all working parents, but not working with WMATA to ensure safe access to school is a massive oversight. I know it's a balancing act but to not communicate at least the transport issues and offer alternatives is terrible. |
