If you gift in March and go in May or early June Boston for sure. It's better when students are there.

One day at Epcot to see the aquarium, do the Living with the Land tour, and seafood dinner at the Coral Reef watching the fish, and ride Guardians of the Galaxy. Then go swim with manatees. All of the other suggestions sound freezing cold and not fun.

San Diego isn’t a bad idea but that’s a long and expensive flight and expensive hotels.

If he is truly into ocean life, then Monterey Bay Aquarium could be special.

Orlando will cost more than $2k for three people

There’s one adult and kid on this trip.

I misread - I thought all three were going. For two it might be doable.

It’s 2 people. Flights for 2 pax = $600. hotel $150 @ 3 nights = $450. food $100/day = $300. Epcot tickets = $300. manatee excursion = $150. car rental = $150. total = $1900.

Don't forget things like gas, parking, Ubers, tips, whatevers - those add up.

Iceland- even or especially in March it’s great, and flight times are convenient

Sure but those are the same at any destination.

I just entered a random weekend into Costco travel and you could do San Diego flight, car and hotel for $1300. Add the zoo and a day or two at the beach and I think you’d still be at budget. Food is cheap there if you like burgers, tacos and burritos

Yes and that's why leaving just $100 of a cushion might not be enough for this particular trip! If you go somewhere less expensive or that you can drive to or whatever, then you can build that into your budget. Unless the budget is more flexible than OP has said.

+1 come learn about the founding fathers!

If you want to learn about the founding fathers, Boston and Philly are better options. DC was irrelevant at the time of the founding.

Ahh I thought $2k was for everything. Well there's a lot you can do for $2k in flight and hotels, with as much as you want for the rest of it. Forget Orlando or Boston! Save those for another day.

Your best best is somewhere local. Go to the outer banks or Busch Gardens or something. Your options are extremely limited.

What a silly post.

OP - our family did special individual trips for each child at 8, 13 and at high school graduation. Each one remains the stuff of memories!

OP I hope you come back and update after the trip!

Ask your kid. It depends on his interests, hobbies, likes.

Can do the WW2 museum, walk around French quarter and do whatever free stuff is offered at the NPS visitor center (we did a drum lesson but they also do walking tours), and also possibly one of the following: Mardi Gras museum, aquarium, day trip to swamp tour (although that’s early in season to see gators — they hibernate), or day trip to see a plantation (many now have well done presentations about the lives of enslaved people).

One more vote for NOLA. Other fun activities in addition to the excellent ones already suggested: riding the streetcar, cemetery tour, ghost tour, jazz at (all ages) Preservation Hall, beignets at cafe du monde, stroll through City Park. Such a fun, unique American city - it will not disappoint.
