Boston is cold and likely damp but it has a science museum. The MIT and Harvard museums, great seafood and an aquarium. Plus the Freedom Trail. Good public transpo even in snow.

Yes! I don’t think it will feel special enough to stay in the area.

Hmmm. He’s fed sharks at an aquarium. Not sure which kind.

No. I am just calling the trip this. 13 is a a significant age.

Can you tie it to something of significance? Make it a service trip or visit a place to try out another language?

I’m such a task master and would normally find this appealing but I really want him to just go somewhere to have fun.

March is a rough time of year for weather in a lot of interesting places.

For cheap flights....how about Atlanta. Go to the big aquarium there.

If he would like classical Greek stuff maybe Nashville with its full size replica of the Parthenon.

There are nice restaurants and museums everywhere.

Southern California is a long way to go. But maybe you can find an affordable whale watching cruise. I have done whale tourism in Massachusetts and Maine in the summer. It's very interesting.

What about visiting San Francisco and the sealions?

Honestly Baltimore has a lot of cool stuff. The Aquarium, the Walters has Faberge eggs, and the Visionary Art Museum is fun and weird. There's also the Constellation warship.

Yes, Baltimore was my first thought.

San Francisco, too.

Kid sounds pretty indulged.

NYC, take Amtrak Acela for the fun of it, stay at the Indigo Trinity Place hotel (new and clean with good storage), do Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The food at Fraunces Tavern was good for a family lunch. If your kid would like Hamilton on Broadway, there are a lot of Hamilton references near Wall Street and he's buried at Trinity Church. There are lots of possibilities in NYC.

For a kid who likes museums, I would recommend researching special exhibitions in multiple cities and pick the most appropriate.

Not significant in our family. Nice to have money like that. If I could do it, though, I would opt for the old-fashioned Grand Tour at 18. Children at that age will appreciate it more. But, alas, saving for college

$2k is NOT a lot of money, this will not be an extravagant trip.

Maybe Memphis? Weather should be good, plus there’s a fantastic zoo, the National Civil Rights Museum, Pink Palace science/history museum, the marching ducks at the Peabody Hotel, and the Bass Pro Pyramid (which has alligators and fish).
