Middlebury is in the middle of nowhere vermont with nothing to do for miles. It's pretty but DC knew they'd be bored staying there for a week, let alone 4 years.

Yeah except a ski area and amazing trails but that's not for everyone.

But what is Waterville near?

Ah yes, all the times college students have to afford and finances they have for skiing!

Middlebury is a charming New England town with a population of 10,000. Waterville is a dumpy old mill town with a population of 15,000. Middlebury is 50 minutes from Burlington and 2.5 hours from Montreal. Colby is 75 minutes from Portland and 3 hours from Boston.

Colby's acceptance rate is crazy low. Pretty much an impossible admit for all but the sports recruits.

Our tour guide at Colby said that last winter he skied four days a week. Student passes for Sugarloaf are very cheap.

I was in Waterville in July and I thought it was really nice.

Much better than Lewiston, ugh.

OP here - W&L is now firmly in the mix

friend of kids told him he would be nuts going to northeastern SLAC with election coming. When Trump wins will be much hostility toward right leaning kids at most of Nescac (sans Trinity)

many won’t like this take, but que sera sera

Not to get into politics too much, but assuming Trump will win is a bold take.

Anyways, we walked by a Palestine protest while helping DC move out from his NESCAC, and it was quite small and very calm; hardly any unrest like there was at larger schools.

Colby’s spent a fortune on gentrifying Waterville - I thought it was perfectly acceptable when we toured there, with quite a few nice restaurants and a good hotel. Infinitely superior to Lexington VA by comparison, as an example

The student pass for the Middlebury snow bowl is cheap. So is used ski gear. Even student passes for the big resorts nearby are reasonable.

College students in northern New England manage to ski and snowboard all the time if they want. Even the ones who are not wealthy.

Yes. 2024-25 full season pass for a Middlebury student is $129.
