You have no idea how pathetic you sound, do you?

Lol. Not worse than using the word frat. It speaks – trying to talk about something you have no idea about.

You don’t need to have been in a fraternity to understand the culture. There are no secrets. The worst ones are almost always the Southern white guy ones. The same chapters in colleges with different cultures don’t have similar problems. Fraternities in Arizona. Florida , Arkansas, Alabama, Virginia and the outlier Dartmouth New Hampshire have the worst records of hazing and sexual assaults. Alcohol is the main activity and getting girls drunk enough that they will black out and be led to the bedroom is the end goal. Sexism and racism are prevalent

There are wonderful fraternities whose goals are to accomplish and do real charity work. There are alcohol free fraternities that don’t have these problems. There are fraternities that don’t do hazing. But the hazing alcohol fueled fraternities are the most popular.

Southern white guy ones?!
What about the black fraternities that make their new members burn and brand their forearms?

Your point?

Wondering if he will just live his life or be held accountable

Pretty sure he’ll just live his live. It’s not like there’s a lawsuit. They just terminated that chapter at UVA. As has happened many times before with others.

If it’s PIKA and if he was on exec he will likely be sued by National.

He was 100% fine with anything he did as was I as his parent. He was never forced to drink or eat anything nor in any type of life threatening situation. And yes I do believe him. His chapter is especially dedicated to NOT hazing, which is why he chose it.

What you also have to know is that UVA is VERY strict about hazing.

PIKA is well known for hazing, as is Theta Chi. If you pledged there, you knew what you're getting into. Not that it excuses it, but the kids know which houses will put them through hell and which won't.

If it’s well known for hazing, why do kids choose this fraternity over other ones?

They're top tier. If you get a bid to a top-tier frat, which most people who post in these threads didn't, you put up with 8-12 weeks of hazing in exchange for 3.5 years of god status on campus and endless mixers with the hottest sororities. Top-tier frats also plug you into an amazing professional network with tons of valuable connections for finance and consulting jobs after graduation. Short-term pain, long-term gain. And 99 times out of 100, the pain isn't really pain, just mild to moderate discomfort.

You don’t address the Why. Why is it necessary to abuse others for 8-10 weeks? Would it be ok to do that to someone as part of the job interview for a consulting job? Why not?

You’re likely to try to avoid answering this question by attacking me. No doubt something about me being a big loser who never got into the right frat - and uses the term frat - and has had no success in life as a result.

NP. I was not part of the Greek system at all, but even I understand why they do this. At best, light hazing forms tighter bonds in a pledge class. At worst, people die. Unfortunately, these are often groups of wealthy, coddled, incredibly inebriated kids who think they’re invincible. As teenagers, they’ve increasingly been sheltered from any real danger and they get to college and think this makes them tough guys.

"Light hazing forms tighter bonds"

Thankful my son wanted no part of that.

My DD is in a "mid-tiered" sorority at a school that barely has a greek system (D3 school)
She did it because literally ALL of her friends were rushing. And it was a path to excellent sophomore year housing. Which worked out well for my kid (ended up in a large DINGLE, sharing a bathroom with only the RA in the connected room, when roommate decided not to live in sorority). 4 of her 8 best female friends ended up in the same sorority, along with most of the people she dances with (50%+ of the sorority is involved in dance). So she ended up with simply the group of people she was going to hang out with anyhow. Might as well get guaranteed excellent housing for sophomore year as a part of it.

When I was in a fraternity, I gave out plenty of dingle! Whether it was large is for the recipients to say.

I believe I’d sue or at the very least lawyer up.

Oh, I get it now! It’s fine to degrade yourself and humiliate others in order to party and connect with the “right people.” 🤮

+1 It's so pathetic. "God status"??? Anyone complicit in the worshiping is just as pathetic.

I was in a sorority in college and observed that there are always one or two guys who give off psychopath vibes and are know to be violent but appear charming . This isn’t a stereotype these guys really exist. They come up with really genius stuff and the other guys go along at first and the quickly want to abandon it after the initial laugh wears off but then those couple of guys keep going and it’s disbelief and then fear about what those guys are capable of

Southern White men started the whole thing to keep themselves segregated. Branding is horrific but I’m not sure they have alcohol hazing which causes death.

People in Greek life don’t call them “frats” because they self-importantly feel this is a derogatory term (“Would you call your country a c——?” was how my fratty brother used to earnestly explain to me every time I “forgot”).

The rest of us do take great delight in calling them frats, thanks very much.

Who pulled more in college, you or your brother?

“Pulled more”? Do girls in sororities use that term to describe their conquests? Sad. But ok, I guess my brother “pulled more”; I met my husband while I was at Harvard. He was not in a frat.

My brother was a frat boy at the University of Pittsburgh. I visited his frat house once, and it fit the stereotype of frat culture to an almost cartoonish degree. So, yeah, I guess he “pulled more.”

Party on, bro.

Forgot to add, my brother’s frat had a party on Martin Luther King Day at which they served watermelon and fried chicken and dressed in doo rags and “ghetto attire.” This was not so long ago, and my brother’s frat was apparently one of the “best” ones.

But don’t call them a “frat”! That’s so disrespectful.

There was also an incident of a fraternity at Yale who had a party and advertised White girls only. Not long ago and verified by Black women who tried to go. Frat boys, it’s a well deserved insult for many.

That old stereotype about long term benefits, right. And if you consider white girls who bleach their hair unnatural shades of yellow and are willing to degrade themselves for attention hot then that’s the place to be.

It's not a stereotype. Compared to the general population, the percentage of CEOs, one-percenters, and even U.S. presidents who are fraternity men is exceptionally high. And if you actually spent time in a top-tier fraternity house pulling, you'd know that the teen movie trope where all sorority dimez are bleached blond bimbos is totally false.

Basically true, but I'm not sure it's a cause-and-effect. Frat members are likely wealthier and/or come from more wealthy/well-connected families. They likely lived in wealthier zip codes than the student body at large and this will typically translate to better connections after college and more money-making opportunities.

Not so much the fraternity membership granting advantage - just an advantage built-in to fraternity members.

That being said, connections are important, especially in non-technical careers. There's a reason why certain industries are full of ex-frat boys.

That describes the Bush men, classic frat boys. We all know why Clinton was in a fraternity. But it’s not as big a deal as it used to be. The traditional Ivy League degree with your frat brothers is no longer the only path to politics or heading corporations. If fraternity members keep acting like racists douchbags with ridiculous senses of entitlement they will be slowly become extinct. Another embarrassing part of American life.
