See The Age of Deer pp 190-194.

I am not supportive of culling 40% of the deer.
But I encourage supporters to be clear just what means are planned. Just sharpshooter and head shots? Or....????

Not in my yard.

You don't headshot a deer. The skull is quite thick and a small target

Bolt guns. They throw nets over the family as they eat the bait food and use bolt guns like they use to kill cattle. The fawns cry. Read the book.

The fawns you see on your walks with kids this summer have a 40% chance to be killed this winter along with their family here. Culling will be sharpshooters or if on private property with permission, nets and bolt guns to the skull.
That's what Arlington's unelected staff decided in cahoots, er, consultation with White Buffalo the designated culling contractor. White Buffalo does offer nonlethal control but that costs more. The weasel Board went along like they do for everything.

None in all of NoVA. There are strict safety protocols that are closely obeyed. Fairfax County also culls deer, and has for many years.

Arlington plans to spend $150K on its crony contractor killing this winter.

Why isn't there some way to make the deer sterile, like putting something in food that the deer want?

I live in Arlington and almost never see deer. I don't think this is as big of a problem as we're making it out to be.

I am near the hospital and they are everywhere. I worry about them in the middle of Washington Blvd. in the mornings.

Well Arlington has signed the contract for deer shooting starting in about 6 weeks.
The Arl Now story has a map of the parks near you where they will bait and shoot at $3500 a night for a total of $59k.

Deer aren't people.

I found 2 baby deer in my yard last spring - they were beautiful. I wish there was another way to handle this issue rather than shooting them.

We could try to introduce wolves to the area. Would you prefer that?

I would. We need to rewild Arlington and push all urbanization back into the District.

Brilliant plan Arlington; just bloody brilliant

Invite armed rednecks in to shoot off guns all night long (my dogs will be miserable for days) just to murder innocent, defenceless baby deer.
