Why is everyone in Takoma Park weird?

Anonymous
I just think it's really interesting how committed some people are to thinking that all liberal / radical people are privileged idiots.

who have never held a real job.

Then how do they buy $1 mil homes?

Trust fund

Not usually in Takoma Park.

Absolutely in Takoma Park. The majority of the activists/hippies remaining are trust fund kids. They don’t need to work, they are removed from reality and are looking for purpose.

75-year-old trust fund "kids", if so.

Right, kids (sons/daughters) of wealthy parents who have trust funds. Lots of them Takoma Park. They don’t need to work and can just be activists all day. They also don’t have a sense of reality.

I’m a 45 year old woman in a $1M+ Takoma park house. Neither my husband nor I have trust funds. We both have regular DC jobs, HHI is around $325k. Like most of the dozens and dozens of families we know in TP - we bought our first house in TP 15 years ago with a small down payment. We are solidly left leaning and chose TP bc of the its values and quirkiness. But nobody would call us, nor any of our friends “hippies.”

325K household income is not ‘regular DC jobs’. It’s a ridiculous statement to be honest.

Trust fund kids, maybe. Hippies, no. Not unless they're 75 or older.

TKPK is pretty diverse.

You thought the audience at a talk was weird. What was the topic? Sounds like it has nothing to do with a large geographic area called TP.

The trust funders are the full-time activists. If you live in TP, you know them well.

The site is cringe. The guy that runs it is cringe. And to confirm how weird Takoma Park is, apparently his wife is Republican.

Um, yeah. Whoever said that obviously has no clue as everyone in TP knows she's a HUGE liberal and donates her time funding abortions. I am personally a big fan of the Takoma Torch; it's fabulous satire and I appreciate that we can poke fun at ourselves.

And why be so mean-spirited about people in the first place?

Signed, a Takoma Park resident (not Eric)

Sure it is - feds with 20 years of experience. One person is 150k and one is 175k - very common in the DMV.

However, the people that dominate city politics and have the tjme and energy to engage with the City Council are the older aging hippies who are sometimes ridiculous. But it’s not at all representative of the community as a whole.

Signed TP resident of 15 years

This is true and false. Those white collar families chose to live with the hippies because they enjoy it and mostly agree with them.

Nope. People live in TP because it is close-in, has good schools and nice neighborhoods. Signed, moderate (if not center-right) and very happy TP resident.

This is hilarious. Silver Spring exists.

I agree with the prior poster - that is why we live in TP. SS is not interchangeable.

TP and SS are not interchangeable. TP has sky-high city taxes plus county taxes. SS has only county taxes.

+1 passing laws and legislation they don’t have to live with but the rest of the county does.

Racially and ethnically, yes. Politically diverse? No.

It's true, maybe in the old days being liberal was about helping labor or the working class. Definitely not the case anymore.

Actually, being liberal is still about those things. You just don't care about helping others any more.

When people post stuff like this, I generally figure they're advocating for affirmative action for Republicans.
