Are marriages worse today?

I’m not trying to be pedantic, but you cannot believe that 47% of marriages were between women and horrific abusers who beat them and they couldn’t leave. I’m trying to understand realistically if people were generally better spouses to each other or if half of marriages were as bad as they are today, but women could not leave them.

There can be bad marriages without horrific abusers who beat their wives — probably the precent of modern marriages like that is closer to your 2.3% of people who were willing to go through the effort to divorce when it was much harder. Now divorce is easier so people who don’t suit or have bad but not abusive marriages divorce. Back then they were stuck with each other due to the prohibitive social and financial cost of divorce.

+1 My XDH wasn't abusive but had untreated depression/anxiety. It was a bad marriage because of that.

But marriages where both people are educated and slightly older than average have a lower divorce rate. So there are marriages that survive in modern times even when the women are very capable of leaving.
