Red Wave coming in Maryland!

Anonymous
I’m a democrat and while I don’t want a ‘red wave’ (I’m voting for Harris & Alsobrooks, since I don’t want the Senate to flip), I don’t know what other options I have anymore for local politics.

Schools overcrowded and standards rapidly declining, taxes continuing to rise with no real accountability (I haven’t forgotten the $14m electric buses debacle in MoCo), cramming through zoning changes by handwaving away real concerns … in pursuit of equity and inclusivity, we have lost the plot.

I’m anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-homophobia with the best of MoCo citizens. I want people to be safe and welcome in our community. I’m also tired of elected officials telling me I’m “-ist” for asking why kids aren’t learning to read, pointing out no research has been done by the MoCo Planning Committee on infrastructure effects of upzoning, and being tired of being told that the uptick in crime isn’t real, since it ‘was worse in the 90s.’

I feel like I'm in upside down land. I’m at the point where, if I could find a legitimate moderate republican candidate who is pro-choice, I’d be voting for him/her. I can’t be the only democrat feeling this way? If it weren’t for the GOP’s backwards views on abortion and gun control, I’d be voting Harris/Hogan, frankly.

Hogan for Senate
Neil Parrott for CD6
Maybe another R surprises and flips CD3
Bethany Mandel for Board of Ed
Term Limits to kick out Elrich
David Blair in 2026 third time’s the charm
Mink and Jawando out of a job in 2026
Property tax caps pass
This list will grow, We The People are FED UP!

Is everyone getting their period on the same day? That's all I can think of when someone says "red wave"

Republicans won’t vote for a republican who acts like a democrat. Democrats won’t vote for a republican who acts like a democrat when there’s an actual democrat to vote for instead. Who is Hogan’s constituency? He doesn’t have one.

Me! I loved Hogan when he was governor and I will vote for him again.

-a female moderate democrat

You can't vote for him again until 2026, which is the next gubernatorial election.

Also, everyone knows that people who identify themselves as "a moderate Democrat" on DCUM are actually Republicans. One example of "a female moderate democrat" is Bethany Mandel, who is neither moderate nor actually a Democrat.

I am actually a democrat! I voted for Obama and Biden and both Clintons. But Hogan is different - he did a great job running our state, he changed his mind about the purple line when he got more information (he said this- who else does this? A moderate!) I loved his reaction to Trump’s endorsement, too. I just like the guy and think he’s a reasonable adult who I’d be happy to represent me. Alsobrooks is a regular politician.

I agree with everything you said, but I don't trust the rest of the Republicans. I'd vote for Hogan if he caucused with the Democrats.

That's like saying you'd vote for Hogan if he were A Person Who Isn't Hogan. Hogan has been a Republican his whole life. He's had plenty of opportunities to stop being one, but yet he's still a Republican. He's not going to stop now.

Yep. Those were Hogan's exact words spoken proudly through his own lips. Have you seen the latest Alsobrooks commercial using Hogan's words to identify who Hogan is politically and who he aligns himself with.

This is me exactly! Except I am voting for Hogan.

There are lots of us in the middle and when there’s an actual human candidate who I feel represents my “purple” then I’m going to vote for him. When you start yelling about control of the senate blah blah I tune out just as quickly as I tune out the crazy republicans. I am a moderate democrat in MD voting for Hogan.

I hope you're happy when Trump controls the Senate and White House because Trump wins Pennsylvania, Georgia and Arizona and Hogan wins Maryland by two votes. Congrats.

You are in the same position that many of us are at this point. We are left leaning democrats, even liberals, trying to navigate local politics run by progressives. Who we voted for locally (the MOCO council, for example) turned out to be beholden to progressives, and they are quite happy to sell us out for the progressive cred that they hope will move them up. In the meantime, we are stuck hoping that their success fails them up and away.

As a country we want to drag the Overton window to the left, but it’s quite far enough left already in Montgomery County. So, of course, the progressives screech that we are pro Republican or something just as silly.

That's why this is a non issue. Even if the "red waves" comes, they're still blue!

This! This is how I feel and why I get so irritated when people yell at me about liking Hogan! I am a democrat from a national viewpoint but a crazy republican in Montgomery County!

No one said "red wave" though. OP said "red tide" which is a toxic algae bloom.

Hogan isn't running for county council, he's running for Senate, so from a national view point, you're voting for a Republican whose first vote will be for a Republican majority leader

This is a very peculiar way to think. It's like you're either a troll or dealing with a great deal of cognitive dissonance, or you're so gullible as to have bought into right-wing propaganda about DEI, CRT and other phantom menaces. No elected officials are calling you "ist" for the things you say you ask.

So, yeah, you're kind of the only Democrat "feeling this way." Actually, the fact that you didn't capitalize "Democrat" in a post where you purportedly express concern about kids allegedly not being able to read (which isn't even a factual thing), it points more to "troll."

No one is buying it.

I know some crazy Republicans in Montgomery County, and none of them are Democrats from a national viewpoint. Not one. Nowhere near.

There it is again. Now you're sock-puppeting. I'm reporting this one.

The DMV political spectrum goes something like this, from left to right:

Kristin Mink - extreme left
Marc Elrich - far left
Jamie Raskin - left
Wes Moore - mainstream Dem
David Blair - center-left
Abigail Spanberger - true center
Larry Hogan - center-right
Glenn Youngkin - establishment Republican
Winsome Sears - establishment/MAGA
Andy Harris - full MAGA

I’m not as familiar with VA Republican politics but SW Virginia GOP would be pretty MAGA.

Anyways the sweet spot is between Moore and Hogan. We need more of them, and more David Blairs and Abigail Spanbergers and fewer Kristin Minks.

The fact you think I’m a troll because I don’t agree with your version of what a democrat “should be” is what I’m talking about. Btw I’m on mobile and that’s why democrat doesn’t automatically capitalize. Literally get over yourself. If you read 5 paragraphs and take something as simple as a single letter to disregard the entire point… if Hogan wins, it will be because of dems like you who ignore and called people like me trolls, instead of actually seeing a contingent of dems who are trying to bring up real, valid concerns, and being told they’re lying.

Re: the “isms” - my children speak Spanish at home, and yet I have literally been told I’m showing “white supremacy culture” for asking why phonics isn’t being taught anymore (after the Sold a Story podcast went viral). I was told I’m prejudiced against ESL students.
