Kid got into Harvard ED but their dream is our local Community College. Which one would you choose for them, DCUM? I think they are *just* above average to average compared to their classmates at their Big 3.

Their stats are: 5.6 weighted, 35 APs (all 5's), SAT 1600, three varsity sports, captain of the robotics team, editor in chief of the student newspaper, 4,567 service hours (towards a cause they LOVE and isn't typical - made for a great essay!), VERY SPIKY EC (so spiky it would poke you if you touched it), 16 national awards, congressional recommendation.

Their father is very concerned and has already said he won't fund any college education that isn't a triple major Ivy League education. How can I bring them both back to center?

Thanks for the laugh.

Any discussion of donut hole families on DCUM brings minimum 10 pages of judgement and you should have made better life choices to afford 680K in college costs at a private college for two kids no matter the details of where you live, expenses, performance of investments, when you started making the salary. Even an inquiry of “how does”, “should I “ is soundly rebuked. Trying to figure out how cc is more hostile.

Wondering the same. I didn’t read CC, but it must have been bad because, I agree, frustrations from “donut hole” families are received with scorn on DCUM.

I find college confidential a million times more sane than dcum mostly because a user name is required to post and there doesn’t seem to be any troll posts. I don’t think it is at all hostile to donut hole families, there are many threads about where to get the best merit aid.

+1 DCUM has some real pro and anti school psychopaths. CC will simply have posters that ask silly questions that could be easily answered with a web or school specific search.

You forgot to include, “one and done.”

at least he's better than SkiEurope!

you know what A2C mod really irks me? RichInPitt. I find it strange that a middle-aged man takes so much joy in making rude remarks to kids online. But what do I know... every comment from him gets a downvote from me 🤷‍♀️

Agree, though I don't think he realizes sometimes that his posts come across as rude. He's just trying to help.

Who do y'all think are the decently correct posters over there? Who do you pay attention to, just the mods, or are there others?

I’m looking for more options…please post other ideas!

A lot of these "troll posts" are just people shifting details around to keep from being identified. E.g., I adjust my kid's stats whenever I post about them.

Hahahahaha. I missed this previously. That guy posts all the freaking time on CC. There are a few there that I wonder about, like do tgey do anything other than post on CC and reddit? Who pays their bills? Are they independently wealthy? Go to a job where ttey do absolutely nothing? So many questions!

This used to be my go-to, but I had to quit it because of the laziness of so many posters who apparently don’t know how google or the search function work.

Also for the number of loudmouths who routinely shared factually wrong, and often illegal, advice.

I tried Grown and Flown on FB as well and it’s a mess. So many parents trying to live vicariously through their kids or with weird approaches to parenting.

Pretty sure that this is correct. There are strong indicators based on that person's activity. Claims to be an alum of two outstanding schools even though her responses do not appear to be from an educated person (every question or issue has an absolute, clear-cut answer which is the opposite of what higher education teaches us). Seems clear that this mod has never worked in the real world during her life.

The mods are a distinguishing factor. Some are overbearing and some are kind and reasonable.

SkiEurope is a he, and I think you're correct he's never worked a real job ever.

Here's a 2015 thread on Ivy Day when he was applying from prep school to college

oh LOL. I thought he was a 55 year old man. But he's a 25 year old man. Wow

I always thought skieurope was male but 55/60 years old. This is a surprise.
I assume TominBoston is 55/60 but I question it now.

It wouldn't be right to keep him from his dream community college! My daughter with similar stats but also a music theater soloist and NMS recipient loves her community college. She's working toward becoming president there.
