Any guidance on how to navigate? What are the best sections for parents who want general advice from other parents?

I like CC more for deep dives into a specific college or subject. Their results threads are aging but years before Reddit you could read a ton of student results for each school, enough that you could get a feel for the bar was and for what that school is looking for. In my limited experience even a couple of admits with profiles similar to my child had predictive value. There also used to be parents with deep experience in a particular school and really understood the school and the nuances of admission there; their answers still turn up if you Google search subject + College Confidential.

I did a lot of research on a small number of schools for my kids. With that I was able to guide them with some confidence in the odds.

Unfortunately those threads are pretty old, but I still think reading them is useful in giving you at least a sense what schools are looking for. It’s a lot of work, but I found the effort well worth it.

I read all topics, latest threads. Then I use the search bar for particular schools.

The CC parents foriums can be helpful. If you click on parents forums there are forums for various HS graduating classes. You can ask for advice there. It also has a pretty good search function where you can see if others have already discussed your question. People are generally helpful and it is less mean spirited than this place can get.

I love the Sarah Harberson private ($) FB group.

and now I will sit back and wait to be accused of being a paid shill.

The Parents of the HS Class of 2024 forum is an effing disaster. It is dominated by a small group of parents who have a weird obsession with cocktails and love to talk about their Biglaw jobs. Very rarely is it ever on topic and the majority of people seem like folks I would go out of my way to avoid in real life.

Student doctor network (sdn) forums for someone considering medical school/other health careers w/very competitive admissions.

I agree with this. Heavy use of CC plus Sara is a strong combination. And unfortunately with the ED games out there those with more knowledge do better. It’s not fair, but it’s the reality.

Totally agree I have a very hard time navigating it as well

Really? I have not noticed that. Now I am going to go look! CC does suffer from some posters who seemingly post on every forum, as self-declared experts. But generally people do try to provide constructive advice. And the moderators do try to keep people on topic.

Seems like a cliquish ladies club. An echo chamber of a small group of posters. Excellent for info on University of California schools. The site is toxic and often misinformed--although I think that the posters mean well.

I feel like in all of them the students obsessed with getting into T20 drown out the rest of everyone trying to get into good but not crazy schools.

College confidential (which forums)

I used like DCUM before all the crazy ads. Looking for something better too.

I sort of want to join now? Except it's really bad when I am in those forums and posting with my actual name.
