BOE election candidates 2024

A lot of people are CIP fluent. We don’t need another person who by default wants to pit east county against west county and demonize an entire group of people based on zip code. I know that is a favorite pastime on dcum but really the county has big problems and it is time to put that aside. We need to be open to some new ideas and new frameworks. Laura has been very involved in the advocacy apparatus that has brought us this BOE and this MCPS. We need some new perspectives that will focus on accountability and academics. I really hope someone else will run.

What do you mean by this, specifically?

Reform the grading policy for high school.

- add + and -
- get rid of the A plus B is an A (aka 89.5 plus 79.5 is an A)
- add final exams and count the ap test as a final
- limited retakes
- consequences for turning in assignments excessively late
- in class hand written assessments to avoid AI/ internet cheating
- consequences for not reading books in English classes (if you don’t read the the one book how can you get an A?)
- give teachers the time to grade and provide written feedback so that students can learn to write
- teach grammar
- get rid of honors for all English classes in high school
- more vocational/career/tech Ed

That is just a start

Are you running? You should.

my kid would HATE that (not the policy, the attention) but i would love to vote for this platform

I agree. It's mostly a good platform.

She is quite cozy with the current BOE. But maybe she never liked Shebra.

It'll be interesting to see if Shebra Evans files again too, or if she's going to leave the board.

Evans got what she wanted. Her kid is finished. No reason to fight the upcoming public debate battle when that's not her forte.

So much for diversity of thought. Look where the lock-step progressive agenda has led MOCO and MCPS.

"Diversity of thought" = affirmative action for Republicans.

I would add

No Flat Earthers
No Anti Vaxxers
No Creationists

to the PP's list.

I don’t think a 79.5 is an A. Do you think that makes me a flat earther?

Reform the grading policy for high school.

- add + and -

I don’t need pluses and minuses and teachers don’t need additional headaches.

- get rid of the A plus B is an A (aka 89.5 plus 79.5 is an A)
I’m fine with the rounding at .5, but do agree that the semester grade should be the average of the two final percentages.

- add final exams and count the ap test as a final
No to AP exams being finals. The exams already have enough stress and pressure associated with them and the scores are not all back in time.

- limited retakes
This already exist. Teachers and Administrators need to enforce

- consequences for turning in assignments excessively late
This already exist. Teachers and Administrators need to enforce

- in class hand written assessments to avoid AI/ internet cheating
This is only a temporary partial solution. AI/Internet is here folks need to devise practical ways to deal with it.

- consequences for not reading books in English classes (if you don’t read the the one book how can you get an A?)
Shouldn’t the consequence be the grade you get on the work associated with the books? Not sure why anything outside of that is needed

- give teachers the time to grade and provide written feedback so that students can learn to write
that a bigger issue that crosses staffing and substitutes

- teach grammar
Agree.
- get rid of honors for all English classes in high school
Agree

- more vocational/career/tech Ed
We need some full program evaluation on all programs before we add anything more. Including why some are under enrolled and others are vying for seats. This is especially need post pandemic as various partnerships and industries have changed.

Depends. Do you support a flat tax as just in a society like ours? The lack of critical thinking would be similar...

Kidding aside, I'm a DP, and while I'd hope we wouldn't vote in anyone on the less thoughtful side (book banners come to mind), I think it's a shame we have such a one-sided set of elected officials. Whenever that is the case, damaging agendas with plenty of pork get though with limited oversight.
On the national stage, I see conservatives as having been more "successful" with this than liberals in the past few decades, but there hasn't been GOP hegemony in MoCo or Maryland for a long time.

I don't know if I'd support a more conservative candidate -- that would depend on their platform and the alternative -- but I wouldn't want to preclude them from running, even if only to have real debate of issues.

It'll be interesting to see if Shebra Evans files again too, or if she's going to leave the board.

No to Laura Stewart. She has been a cheerleader for this superintendent (even after the misconduct surfaced) and a vocal advocate for giving tax breaks to developers at the expense of school funding.

She's also pro-busing and protested in favor of forcing kids to read LGBTQ books even when families don't want them to. I'm very liberal and don't care if my kids read these books but anyone who wants schools aka government to get between parents and their children is a fascist

Not seeing pro-McKnight messages on Stewart's social media. I didn't see anything about pro-developer stances either. If you have links, I'm interested to look at that. What I did see was that she is very supportive of LGBTQ students. I don't have a problem with that. As a teacher, I know that these students are at risk for depression and other mental health issues. They are bullied. I'm glad she stands up for these students.

Is this what you mean by Stewart being McKnight's cheerleader?
