Oberlin for non-super woke

What moderate “middle of the road” Republicans fail to realize is that woke fanatics regard them as just as bad as “Trumpers”.

They do. The left lumps anyone from middle of the road to madisonian conservative to hard right to Trumpers all as Trumpers. They are just ignorant

I remember when I was young in the late 70’s people derided Bronx Science because it was full of pot smoking hippies.

And you know what ? It was.

It was also full of intellectually curious, highly intelligent accepting young people.

It was diverse across race, religion, and SES.

And while people know of the successes of the alums perhaps more importantly is how the environment was responsible for opening up their young minds.

What does this have to do with Oberlin ?

When I visited Oberlin with my DC for an accepted student’s day - I had a very visceral reaction - I was completely taken aback by how much it reminded me of Bronx Science from my youth.

Ultimately my DC elected to attend another school but I suspect that Oberlin is a pretty special place.

The kids seem kind to each other and their coop system for living and eating is very unique and rewarding for the kids who participate. Positives imo are the ability to take studio art classes even if you are not an art major, the ability to be in many of the pick up bands around the school even if you're not in the conservatory and the flexibility to double major.

Terrific, thanks!

Anonymous wrote:Hi, from a parent of an actual Oberlin student. We're nearing the end of our Oberlin journey as DC is a fourth year set to graduate this spring, but overall, it's been a pretty good experience. While not musical, DC is a STEM major and has found plenty of opportunities to do research and tutor within the science departments. DC is left-leaning but is not the outspoken activist type and has friends from across the political spectrum, none of whom are particularly loud about their personal beliefs. DC has a lot of friends who are STEM and creative writing majors, who also play in the college orchestra or study Musical Studies or sing in acapella or musical theatre groups - it's not an uncommon combination. Many students in the College taken secondary or beginner music lessons thru the conservatory. DC has met a number of Con and double degree students through language classes and other college classes and it's nice to have such a strong musical presence on campus and to go to concerts to support classmates and friends. Admittedly, DC does attend due to a generous merit scholarship, but we don't have any regrets about the experience as a whole and agree with a previous poster that the Oberlin experience allows for balance and exploration.

Thank you for answering in a substantive way (among all the nonsense!)

Well, the original question was in bad faith.

I don't believe it was was. --a pp with a moderate Dem kid who has similar questions about Oberlin given its stereotype. I'm perfectly prepared to accept posters' views who have actual experience with the campus, and am glad to know my kid wouldn't feel out of place there.

It absolutely was, the use of the loaded term “woke” set the tone. It was a ridiculous bad faith question.

The short answer is anyone who uses “woke” as a pejorative these days is only going to be happy in whatever right-wing fantasyland they curate. The real world just doesn’t think like that.

The Left invents woke & then runs from it.

The Left invents canceling & then calls everyone else intolerant.

The Left invents sanctuary cities, establishes open borders, invites people in, but can’t handle the consequences.

The Left vilifies cops & wonders where crime comes from.

Surely even a moron like you can see the pattern here.

Over the years I've noticed their Facebook feed become progressively more whack: posting memes about how Louisa Mae Alcott was trans, etc. It's a school we would have considered for our artsy, quirky kid, but based on what I've seen from that feed, it's no longer on our list.

I don’t like Oberlin but I would not judge a school based on a social media feed alone.

It’s too bad Oberlin has become a casualty of the extreme progressive perspective. Actually has the bones of a unique and interesting college - esp with its traditional strengths in music and science. It used to be considered one of the best in the country. It’s too bad.

Sweet Jesus how could anyone with a beating heart and sentient mind send their child to Oberlin? That place has literally rendered itself irrelevant and ludicrous.
