Oberlin for non-super woke

Why are people derailing the thread? OP said her kid is middle-of-the-road not conservative. I also have a moderate kid interested in Oberlin (identifies Dem but not super progressive, more pragmatic) and am interested in actual experiences not Trumpers' thoughts.

Look at the difference in tone between the pro-Israel & anti-Israel protesters.

It's true but any conservative kid who has been through FCPS or MCPS knows how to keep his head down.

My kids say there are pretty vocal conservative perspectives in their FCPS school--they get disagreed with by those with different opinions but no one is beating up anyone over politics.

they = everyone trying to get into these schools

Also consider New College in Florida. They have the majors your DC is interested in and are making a concerted effort not to allow woke perspectives on campus.

It's a total crime what DeSantis did to the New College. And that poser Christopher Rufo is on the board there now, which makes it a non-starter for people who care about education.

New College was failing. Enrollment was down by half. It wasn't going to exist in another five years. DeSantis has given it a chance to survive and even thrive. There's a huge market for the kind of school they're making it into. Hillsdale has a 20% acceptance rate despite a cold, miserable, middle of nowhere location. Imagine getting an education like that, one committed to open inquiry and free expression as opposed to woke orthodoxy, on the beach in Sarasota. It will be a highly selective school by the end of this decade.

I would avoid schools like Oberlin like the plague. Employers don't want to deal with angry purple haired kids who think being asked to do work is a micro-agression.

I never voted for Trump, and never will. That said, colleges like Oberlin are producing lunatics who are every bit as crazy as the dude in a trailer with a confederate flag.

Very true, they are birds of a feather. Their false sense of moral superiority, however, charges the need to scream and howl how virtuous they are while denigrating in the most vitriolic way anyone that they disagree with. The lack of self-awareness is quite astounding. They are exactly the people they purport to hate.

DD has just completed her application for Oberlin. Reading this thread made me second guess our decision to apply.

Said from your direct experience with Oberlin, right? Based on empirical evidence, right?

Hi, from a parent of an actual Oberlin student. We're nearing the end of our Oberlin journey as DC is a fourth year set to graduate this spring, but overall, it's been a pretty good experience. While not musical, DC is a STEM major and has found plenty of opportunities to do research and tutor within the science departments. DC is left-leaning but is not the outspoken activist type and has friends from across the political spectrum, none of whom are particularly loud about their personal beliefs. DC has a lot of friends who are STEM and creative writing majors, who also play in the college orchestra or study Musical Studies or sing in acapella or musical theatre groups - it's not an uncommon combination. Many students in the College taken secondary or beginner music lessons thru the conservatory. DC has met a number of Con and double degree students through language classes and other college classes and it's nice to have such a strong musical presence on campus and to go to concerts to support classmates and friends. Admittedly, DC does attend due to a generous merit scholarship, but we don't have any regrets about the experience as a whole and agree with a previous poster that the Oberlin experience allows for balance and exploration.

Please tell me the extent of your familiarity with the thousands of smart young people who are at or have recently attended Oberlin.

Same. Some posters here sound more unhinged then those they describe with such scorn likely behave.

My kid says there are conservative kids who have been socially ostracized for having the “wrong” opinions at his FCPS school.
